Vivo has launched the X500 Pro and X500 Pro Max, the world's first smartphones powered by MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 Pro — a chip built on a 2nm process. The launch edged out rival Oppo by a single day, according to Gagadget. Chinese pre-orders opened September 21, with the Pro Max going on sale September 24 and the Pro following on September 29. In China, both models start at roughly $1,044 (¥6,499 for the Pro, ¥6,999 for the Pro Max), with the Pro Max topping out near $1,343 for a 1TB variant, per Smartprix. No US or UK launch date has been confirmed.
Why It's Surprising: Chip and Camera Firsts Combined
It is rare for two segment firsts to land in one device. According to Gagadget, the Dimensity 9600 Pro packs over 33 billion transistors in a 2+3+3 CPU layout, is the first mobile chip to support both LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage, and cuts multi-core power consumption by 61% versus the previous generation, with an NPU that can run AI models with up to 30 billion parameters on-device. On top of that, the Pro Max carries a 200MP Zeiss APO super-periscope on a 1/1.4-inch Samsung HP0 sensor — Smartprix notes its 400mm-equivalent zoom, enabled by a dedicated G2 Ultra teleconverter, is a segment first aimed at wildlife and sports shooters.
The Evidence: Displays, Batteries and Big Claims
The spec sheets corroborate the flagship positioning. The Pro Max packs an 8,000mAh battery — larger than the OnePlus 16's 7,300mAh cell, as Smartprix points out — with 90W wired and 40W wireless charging; the Pro carries 6,510mAh with identical speeds. The Pro Max uses a 6.85-inch 2K LTPO panel running at up to 144Hz, while the Pro gets a 6.36-inch version of the same BOE Q11 display, which Smartprix reports peaks at 4,500 nits. Vivo also bills the Pro Max as the world's first Zeiss Master Color Screen on this panel, though Gagadget cautions that the main camera's claimed 17EV dynamic range comes from the manufacturer and has not been independently verified.
The Stakes: Rival Flagships and What Comes Next
On converted pricing, the Pro Max lands squarely in iPhone 16 Pro Max ($1,199) and Galaxy S25 Ultra ($1,299) territory, giving Vivo a spec-led pitch against the biggest names in the market. The catch is availability: Gagadget reports that Vivo's X-series has historically had a patchy retail presence outside China, with no US or UK store partnerships announced. A European launch event is confirmed for October 27, where pricing for those markets should become clearer. Smartprix speculates the Pro Max could reach India around October or November 2026, likely priced above raw currency conversion — leaving Western buyers waiting even as China's sales begin this week.
