As Re{form} Vol. 1 sells through Zara, The Guardian reports Bond Street queues and asks whether the collection is a coup or a compromise.

What happened after the drop

John Galliano's first Zara collection, Re{form} Vol. The Guardian reports 'huge excitement' online and queues outside Zara's Bond Street store on Thursday morning as the designs were unveiled. Hypebeast describes the lineup as genderless, built by dismantling, distorting and reconstructing archival Zara garments with couture techniques, and notes it is available now via Zara's webstore.

Why the timing is fraught

Galliano was found guilty of a hate crime in 2011 after racist and antisemitic rants, and in his withdrawal statement said he 'remains fully accountable for the pain caused' by his past words. The Guardian frames the fashion industry split explicitly: some see sufficient atonement after 15 years, others, like biographer Dana Thomas, called the honoring 'a terrible idea'.

A coup or just business?

For Zara, critics tell The Guardian the deal is a triumph regardless of the controversy. Orsola de Castro calls it 'the coup of their career, their life, their brand', while critic Philippe Pourhashemi agrees it is 'a really, really big thing' that someone of Galliano's stature would work with a mass platform. Fashion historian Tony Glenville tells The Guardian he suspects Zara viewed it as 'simply a business deal', and notes the two-year contract keeps stakes low: a couple of small-quantity collections a year give the brand cachet without much risk, with an extension possible if it is phenomenally successful.

What the clothes actually are

Culted reports that Galliano began with existing Zara garments rather than designing from scratch, treating them as raw material: trousers dismantled into cropped, voluminous shapes, an oversized shirt foil-printed to resemble a leather coat, and a lace shift dress reconstructed into an elaborate ruffled collar. The references reach back to Les Incroyables and Les Merveilleuses of post-Revolutionary France — the figures behind his celebrated 1984 Central Saint Martins graduate collection — with frock coats, bias-cut dresses, opera-length gloves and headwear by longtime collaborator Stephen Jones, per Culted. Hypebeast adds film noir and traditional gardening wardrobe elements to the design language.

Prices and positioning

Pricing sits well above Zara's usual line but far below couture. The Guardian says UK prices run from £17.99 to £699, while AOL, citing USA TODAY, reports US prices from $79 to $759, from tulle opera gloves to a military-style tails coat with a faux-fur collar. Vogue's shop list includes a dotted mesh dress at $999 — a figure The Guardian does not mention — alongside a $359 cashmere sweater and $179 striped shirt. According to The Guardian, the collection is positioned as a dialogue between Galliano and the Zara archive, made in all-new materials, and is being read as a pitch to cast Zara as the brand of affordable luxury in the age of Shein and Temu.

What comes next

The partnership runs for two years, with Culted reporting that more chapters of the Zara collaboration are expected across its initial run. Galliano told Vogue the project 're-authors' Zara's recent archives rather than designing from scratch, calling it 'really sustainable from a creative point of view', and said the work is 'beyond gender and beyond seasons'. He also told Vogue that delivering fashion through Zara's enormous platform is 'thrilling'. After a decade at Maison Margiela ended in December 2024, Culted notes this is his first major fashion project since — with the industry watching whether act three, as Galliano put it to Vogue, 'can be the most fun'.
