Bestselling author Jeffrey Archer died suddenly at 86, a day before his final novel Adam and Eve was published.
A Death 'Between Writing Sessions'
HarperCollins announced that Jeffrey Archer, the bestselling British novelist and former politician, died suddenly and peacefully at his home on Monday at the age of 86, dying, in the publisher's words, 'between writing sessions'. His novels sold more than 300 million copies worldwide, were sold in 119 countries, and spent a combined five and a half years on The New York Times bestseller lists, according to HarperCollins.
The Final Novel Arrives a Day After His Death
The most striking detail in the coverage is the timing: Archer's final novel, Adam and Eve, is being published on Tuesday, a single day after his death, with Nikkei Asia reporting a due date of October 6. He had been scheduled to discuss the book at the Cheltenham Literature Festival this weekend. BBC reports he had also returned to his former school, Wellington School, last week to promote it, telling pupils he got 'a real thrill' seeing 'the next generation'.
A Sold-Out Send-Off the Night Before
Archer's last public appearance came with uncanny timing. BBC reports that the day before his death he appeared with broadcaster Gyles Brandreth at a sold-out event at London's Leicester Square Theatre, signing books for hundreds of fans. The National says the event drew hundreds of readers, and Brandreth wrote on X that Archer 'was in the most wonderful, ebullient form' and 'a great storyteller to the last', noting Archer had told him the new novel would be his last.
From Thatcher's Deputy Chairman to Prison
Archer's life spanned three public careers. He became a Conservative MP in 1969, later serving as deputy chairman of the party under Margaret Thatcher, before his reputation collapsed: in 2001 he was convicted of perjury and perverting the course of justice after lying in a libel case against the Daily Star, serving two years of a four-year sentence. BBC reports he returned to the House of Lords after his 2003 release and retired only in 2024.
'Kane and Abel' and a 300 Million-Copy Legacy
Archer built his literary reputation on pacy thrillers, beginning with 1976's Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less and the 1979 classic Kane and Abel, which by УНН's account has sold more than 50 million copies and topped The New York Times bestseller list.
Tributes and What Comes Next
HarperCollins UK chief executive Kate Elton, Archer's editor, called him 'the master storyteller and an editor's dream', saying the house was 'devastated to have lost a writer who has brought joy to generations of readers'. The National notes Archer was a familiar figure to UAE readers through the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature and the Sharjah International Book Fair. BBC reports tributes from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, and that Adam and Eve now arrives posthumously, with the Cheltenham appearance he was due to make now a marker of what was lost.
