The 5-2 Bears acquired All-Pro tackle Jeffery Simmons from the 1-6 Titans for two first-round picks, the boldest trade of Ryan Poles' tenure.
A Blockbuster Days Before the Deadline
The Chicago Bears and Tennessee Titans agreed Thursday on a trade sending four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons to Chicago in exchange for first-round picks in 2027 and 2028, a 2027 fourth-round pick, and a pick swap, with the Titans also sending a 2028 fifth-rounder.
A First in the Common Draft Era
What makes this trade genuinely historic, per ESPN Research, is that Simmons is the first defensive tackle in the common draft era — since 1967 — to be traded for multiple first-round picks.
Bears general manager Ryan Poles had never traded multiple first-round selections before, making this arguably his most aggressive move yet.
That he pried an All-Pro interior defender from a division rival's conference for that price is the kind of rarity that instantly becomes the trade deadline's defining story.
The Phone Call That Changed Everything
Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi told ESPN he had no intention of trading Simmons until a call Wednesday night from Bears GM Ryan Poles, a colleague from their Kansas City Chiefs days, made him reconsider. 'We considered the compensation, and it was too good to pass up,' Borgonzi said.
Coach Robert Saleh agreed, telling reporters that at 1-6, 'eventually a team threw a hook big enough that I don't think any of us could have said no.' A warm reunion awaits too: Simmons will rejoin former Mississippi State teammate Montez Sweat in Chicago.
A Perfect Fit for a Rising Defense
Simmons arrives just as Chicago's defense, eighth in yards allowed and third-best against the run this season per NBC 5 Chicago, gets a genuine anchor.
ESPN reports the Bears' standard pass rush has produced only a 25% pressure rate over the past two seasons, the fourth-lowest in that span, while the defense ranks 23rd in interior pass rush win rate at 13%.
Simmons' 27% pass rush win rate leads the NFL among defensive tackles in 2026, and he leads the Titans this season with four sacks, six tackles for loss, and four passes defended.
Nashville Says Thank You
The trade carries a genuinely touching farewell from Tennessee.
Controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk thanked Simmons for eight seasons as a 2019 first-round pick, four Pro Bowls, and five years as captain, saying his on-field presence 'was surpassed only by what he did off it' and praising his Give 'Em A Reason Foundation for changing lives in Middle Tennessee and Mississippi.
Simmons, 29, leaves with 46.5 career sacks, 72 tackles for loss, and 96 quarterback hits, plus a first-team All-Pro nod last season on a career-best 11 sacks.
What Comes Next
Per Yahoo Sports, the Bears cleared a 53-man roster spot by waiving defensive end Jamree Kromah, and the deal becomes official once Simmons passes his physical Friday.
If he suits up in Week 8, NBC 5 Chicago notes he would face another recently traded star, with Chicago visiting Seattle on Monday Night Football against a Seahawks team that just added guard Quenton Nelson.
The Titans, meanwhile, turn to veterans Solomon Thomas and John Franklin-Myers up front and return to action Sunday at Cincinnati, armed with a massive draft haul for the rebuild.
