Two weeks after Season 4's explosive G7 cliffhanger, Netflix has renewed 'The Diplomat' for a fifth season, Deadline and other outlets report.
Netflix brings back 'The Diplomat' for Season 5
Deadline reports the renewal follows an explosive Season 4 finale in which Kate Wyler dramatically resigned during a G7 meeting in Italy, with her husband Hal soon joining her.
Season 4 heavily featured Allison Janney as President Grace Penn and Bradley Whitford as her husband Todd, and opened its first week with 4.8 million views, in line with Season 3's ratings.
A streaming-era rarity: a fifth-season drama
Five seasons is a relatively long run in the streaming era, which is part of what makes this renewal notable.
The Hollywood Reporter notes the streamer has a pattern of early votes of confidence: 'The Diplomat' was swiftly renewed for Season 2 just 11 days after Season 1 premiered, and Seasons 3 and 4 were each picked up before the prior season had even aired.
Creator and showrunner Debora Cahn told The Hollywood Reporter she does not feel the story is ending: 'It doesn't feel to me like we're in season four. It feels like we're in the juicy middle.'
The evidence: global numbers and award wins
The show's track record explains the fast call. Popviewers reports that across its four seasons 'The Diplomat' has earned over 130 million views since its 2023 debut, spent a combined 13 weeks on Netflix's Global Top 10, and reached the Top 10 in 87 countries.
Season 4 itself climbed to No. 3 on the Global Top 10 in its second week and landed in the Top 10 in 63 countries. According to Popviewers, Season 4 also set a new series record for impressions across Netflix's owned social channels within 13 days of release.
What that finale left behind
Season 5 has rich material to pick up.
Per ELLE's spoiler recap, the finale saw President Grace Penn send warships toward the U.K. to block Russian vessels and declare the U.S. would fire on anyone in the way, prompting Kate Wyler to resign in front of the G7 assembly — followed by Chief of Staff Billie Appiah, Secretary of State Michael Ganon, and finally Vice President Hal Wyler.
Netflix's Tudum quotes Cahn on the group dynamic: 'Moral contagion works in both directions.'
Stars tease a very different Season 5
Fans hoping for answers can take heart that the cast is just as curious. The Hollywood Reporter quotes Allison Janney wondering aloud about her character's fate: 'Is she going to resign?
What does she do? What the hell is going to happen if we get to another season?'
Meanwhile, Deadline reports Russell and Sewell joked about heading 'somewhere very exotic' for Season 5 — Sewell floated 'trouble in Fiji' and Russell added 'a tiki bar' — a far cry from the war looming over the White House.
What comes next for Kate Wyler
No release date, episode count, or confirmed storyline has been announced, with Netflix keeping details under wraps for now, per Popviewers. Variety reports no plot details have been released and fans can expect further information from the streamer later.
There is no sign Season 5 is the final one: Deadline says Cahn has a plan for where the characters end up but does not know how long it is, describing the series as 'a living organism.'
For now, all four seasons are streaming on Netflix, and the awards pedigree — including Russell's SAG Actor win and Janney's Emmy for Season 3, per Variety — suggests the show will keep its prime billing.
