With a 63-degree forecast looming, dozens of NYC Marathon runners are paying Etsy witches for good-weather spells before Sunday's race.

Superstition Meets the Start Line

The New York Post reports that dozens of superstitious athletes are hiring so-called "Etsy witches" to work through Halloween and lower the expected 63-degree highs — temperatures similar to those that made the Chicago Marathon brutal earlier this month.

First-time marathoner Jessica O'Neill Lyublinsky told the Post she spent $20 on a "perfect weather" spell, adding self-confidence and health to the order: "Half of running a marathon, you need a little bit of delusion to get yourself through it, so I'm pretty confident in the spell!"

Why This Forecast Worries Runners

According to the New York Post, temperatures will sit around 50 degrees when the first wave kicks off at 8 a.m., but climb steadily to a high of 63 degrees by 3 p.m. — which could grab bronze for hottest marathon of the past decade, behind 74 degrees in 2022 and 65 degrees in 2023.

Some experts say low 40s are conducive to the best performances, so the balmy air is far from optimal for anyone chasing a personal best.

CBS News notes the race falls on the same day daylight saving time ends, meaning runners must set clocks back at 2 a.m. before heading to Staten Island's Fort Wadsworth start.

The Evidence: $6 Spells and a 3-of-4 Record

The New York Post reports that Lorra Barile, founder of Greenpoint's Reckless Run Crew, encouraged three fellow runners to hire Mirage Mages and its "good weather spell," sold for just $6.

"I've had a three out of four success rate, which is pretty good!" she said, noting she first hired the witch in June when rain threatened the club's annual race — and the skies later cleared in time for the Knicks Parade.

"It's only six dollars. So, why not? Okay, I'll trade off my morning latte for that!" O'Neill Lyublinsky said the $20 felt negligible against roughly $300 in race entry fees, plus sneakers, fuel packs and clothes.

Sunday's Course, Trackers and Stakes

However the weather shakes out, runners face a first in 15 years: CBS News reports NYRR made minor adjustments to the Bronx portion of the 26.2-mile course to minimize community impact, before the finish in Central Park at 67th Street on West Drive.

Waves launch between 8 and 11:30 a.m., starting with the wheelchair divisions at 8 a.m. and the professional women's open field at 8:35 a.m. Spectators can track runners by name or bib number via the NYRR interactive tracker at liveresults.nyrr.org, with official results at results.nyrr.org.

Last year a record 59,226 runners crossed the finish line — a field the warm spell, mystical or not, may slow this time.
