Yahoo reports FX's 'The Bear' will conclude with its fifth season next June, while HBO says 'House of the Dragon' ends with Season 4 in 2028.
Two Streaming Giants Pull the Plug
Per Yahoo's running 2026 tracker of every renewed and cancelled streaming and cable show, FX's critically acclaimed 'The Bear' will conclude with its forthcoming fifth season, premiering June 25. On the same list, Yahoo reports that HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys confirmed to Deadline that 'House of the Dragon' will end with its fourth season, which isn't expected to premiere until 2028. Season 3 of the 'Game of Thrones' prequel is still slated to debut this summer, meaning fans get two more seasons of Targaryen history before the saga closes. Meanwhile, Yahoo notes 'The Bear' star Jeremy Allen White's run as Carmy Berzatto will wrap after one final kitchen pass.
Why the Endings Sting for Fans
What makes these cancellations surprising is the pedigree and momentum both shows still carry. Yahoo emphasizes that 'House of the Dragon' is a popular flagship prequel, and Bloys framed the ending as natural rather than a failure: 'The idea has always been to follow the history of the Targaryens. If you know the books, you know how the Targaryens end up. So there is a natural end to this particular history of that House of the Targaryens,' he explained, per Yahoo. 'The Bear,' meanwhile, is described by Yahoo as a critically acclaimed FX series, yet it will end after Season 5 rather than running on indefinitely.
The Winners in the Same Tracker
The same Yahoo roundup shows the bloodletting was not universal. 'The Pitt' and 'Shrinking' scored early renewals from HBO Max and Apple TV respectively, each greenlit for new seasons the day before their current ones premiered. Netflix renewed 'Black Mirror' for Season 8, picked up 'A Man on the Inside' for Season 3, and gave its YA figure skating drama 'Finding Her Edge' a Season 2 less than two weeks after debut. Paramount+ extended 'Mayor of Kingstown' for an eight-episode fifth and final season and greenlit a third season of 'The Madison' starring Michelle Pfeiffer just one month after its debut. Prime Video renewed 'Cross' for a third season and handed 'Elle' a Season 2 before its series premiere. The contrast sharpens the stakes: streamers are rewarding fast performers while retiring legacy hits.
What Comes Next
The calendar gives fans a runway. According to tvguide.com's October tracker, Sylvester Stallone's 'Tulsa King' was renewed for a fifth season at Paramount+ ahead of its Oct. 16 Season 4 premiere, with production moving to New York to accommodate the storyline, and Apple TV's 'Imperfect Women' — no longer a limited series — will bring Kerry Washington's Eleanor back to Martha's Vineyard in a second season. Those renewals show streamers still investing in crime-adjacent hits even as tentpoles sunset.
