Phantom of the Opera at His Majesty's Theatre will be filmed live at its 40th anniversary gala for a 2027 international cinema release.

What Happened

The West End production of The Phantom of the Opera will be filmed live at His Majesty's Theatre for an international cinema release in 2027, as TheaterMania, Deadline, and The Arts Shelf all report. The capture is a coproduction between Universal Pictures Content Group, Cameron Mackintosh Limited, and LW Entertainment, directed for the screen by Brett Sullivan (Hadestown) and produced by Dione Orrom (Six: The Musical Live!), with UPCG EVP Helen Parker as Executive Producer. The anniversary company is led by Jordan Donica as the Phantom, Beatrice Penny-Touré as Christine, Rhys Whitfield as Raoul, and Sierra Boggess as Carlotta.

Why It's Surprising

The Arts Shelf notes that for the first time, the long-running West End production will be captured on film at the theatre it has called home since its 1986 debut. The filming takes place in front of an audience during the 40th Anniversary Gala Performance on 9 October 2026, and The Arts Shelf reports the capture will include celebrated alumni artists from the past four decades joining the current company on stage for a special curtain call. A show that has resisted a proshot for forty years finally opening its archive — at the very house that premiered it — is the kind of reveal Phantom devotees have waited decades to discuss.

The Evidence in the Cast List

The packed ensemble corroborates the scale of the project. TheaterMania lists Matt Bateman as Piangi, Joseph Millson as Monsieur André, Ian Pirie as Monsieur Firmin, Joanna Riding as Madame Giry, and Millie Lyon as Meg, plus Colleen Rose Curran as Christine at certain performances. The Arts Shelf adds that the full anniversary company will perform at His Majesty's Theatre until 21 November 2026, with casting beyond that date still to be announced. Musical supervision is by Simon Lee, with choreography by Dame Gillian Lynne recreated by Chrissie Cartwright, and the current production directed by Seth Sklar-Heyn.

What Comes Next

Beyond the film, The Arts Shelf reports a bonus for fans: Andrew Lloyd Webber has rediscovered the original analogue master tapes of the 1986 Original London Cast Recording and remixed the score for the first time, restoring previously unreleased sections and rare material from his personal archive. The Phantom of the Opera (The Andrew Lloyd Webber 2026 Mix) arrives digitally on 9 October, with vinyl and CD editions following on 6 November — described as the most complete version of the original recording to date.
