Giant Squid's Sword of the Sea launches October 29 on Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, ending its PlayStation-and-PC exclusivity.

One day's notice: the surf-and-sand adventure jumps platforms

Giant Squid's Sword of the Sea, until now available only on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam, has been confirmed for Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 — and it arrives almost immediately.

According to IGN, the release date trailer shown during Nintendo's Indie World Fall 2026 presentation sets the launch for October 29, meaning players on the new Nintendo hardware can pick it up the day after the reveal.

The game is a third-person adventure in which players explore vibrant lands of waves and sand to restore a long-lost ocean, riding a mystical skateboarding apparatus across the dunes.

For a studio known for atmospheric, movement-driven games, a same-next-day console port with no lengthy marketing runway is an unusually aggressive rollout.

The trailer that broke the news

The announcement arrived as the Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2 release date trailer, shown as part of Nintendo's Indie World Fall 2026 showcase — a fitting venue for a game whose core appeal is the sheer feel of movement.

IGN describes the hook plainly: skim across a desert that behaves like an ocean, summoning back a vanished sea with every ride.

That premise made the game a talking point when it debuted on PS5, and the trailer's job now is to convince Xbox and Switch 2 owners that this wave-riding fantasy is worth picking up on their platform of choice, essentially day one.

Why a same-week port is the surprise

Platform exclusivity windows on stylish indie adventures usually last a year or more before other consoles see them, and ports are typically trailed with months of lead time.

Sword of the Sea doing neither — revealed and released within roughly 24 hours of each other on two new platforms — inverts that pattern entirely. The fact that the game is already playable on PS5 and Steam suggests the port work was finished well in advance and simply held back for the reveal.

The Switch 2's indie wave is just getting started

Sword of the Sea is not arriving alone.

VGChartz reports a dense cluster of Switch 2 announcements and releases around the same window: Schrodinger's Call and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Urban Myth Dissolution Center are already out, while Slime Rancher 2 is set to launch in January 2027 and HYPERyuki: Snowboard Syndicate in early 2027 on Switch 2 alongside PS5, Xbox Series and PC.

The cozy co-op horror game Haunted Paws is slated for May 2027 across Switch 2, Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series and PC, with a demo out now on both Switch models.
