Anthropic launched a $100M Claude Frontier Academy to train 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers by end of 2027.
What happened: a $100M bet on deployment talent
Anthropic announced the launch of Claude Frontier Academy on October 2, 2026, backed by a $100 million commitment to train 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers (FDEs) by the end of 2027. The first cohorts include engineers from Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley and Novo Nordisk, and are running now in San Francisco, New York and London. Participation is by nomination, with organizations checking eligibility through their Anthropic account team.
Why it is surprising: no lab has done this before
The program is a first of its kind from an AI company, built from Anthropic's own work deploying Claude inside the world's largest enterprises. Steve Corfield, Anthropic's global head of business development and partnerships, said no AI company has invested in developing that talent inside its customers and partners at this depth, adding that graduates should set the standard for how AI gets built inside a business. CRN reports that Anthropic's Shambhavi said the program aims to build the bench of frontier deployed engineers in customers and partners, and that it is open to solution providers of all sizes, including boutiques, not just global integrators.
The evidence: a medical-model, two-stage residency
The first program, the Frontier Deployed Engineer Residency, follows the medical model: engineers learn from practitioners, practice on realistic cases, and are assessed before earning credentials. It starts with a multi-day in-person program where participants work through a simulated enterprise deployment from use-case selection through security review to handover, ending in a graded practical. Those who pass earn the Claude Resident Engineer badge and enter a 12-week residency leading a real Claude project at their own organization; a second assessment grants the Claude Frontier Deployed Engineer badge, with the first expected in early 2027. CRN details the in-person stage as three days plus a fourth-day graded practical.
Why the role matters now
Business Insider reports that forward-deployed engineers, a role popularized by Palantir, are becoming a prized role in the AI race, working directly with customers to adapt technology to their systems, data and workflows. According to Business Insider, a Draup analysis found FDE openings rose to 1,404 across five major consulting firms in the year ended May, even as overall job postings across seven firms fell about 24% year over year. The firm also notes Accenture created an Anthropic Business Group in December 2025 and committed to train roughly 30,000 professionals on Claude.
The stakes: scaling an already fast-growing ecosystem
The Academy builds on the Claude Partner Network, where professionals across 46,000 firms have earned more than 175,000 Claude certifications and nearly 4,000 people have completed the immersive Basecamp program. According to CRN, the Claude Academy online platform launched last month has drawn about 8 million visitors with 27 courses and 426 lessons, and Anthropic's certified consultant base grew from 36,000 in July to roughly 75,000 by August. Anthropic also expects the academy to expand over time to roles beyond engineering, including executives and knowledge workers, per CRN.
What comes next: badges in 2027, open questions
The first Frontier Deployed Engineer badges are expected in early 2027, with the program growing toward the 10,000-engineer target by the end of 2027. FourWeekMBA notes that the $100 million is a commitment and the 10,000 a target, and that Anthropic's announcement does not disclose what the money covers, any participant fees, cohort sizes or pass rates, meaning key program economics remain unestablished. Anthropic calls training 10,000 FDEs 'the first step of many,' signalling more Academy programs beyond the residency.
