Yahoo and IGN report the Street Fighter film gives FGC legend Justin Wong a '37' tattoo cameo, honoring the legendary Evo Moment 37 parry.
The '37' tattoo and the prison cameo
According to Yahoo, the upcoming Street Fighter movie will reference the franchise's most iconic fighting game community moment with a cameo from FGC legend Justin Wong, whose character sports a '37' tattoo — a nod to Evo Moment 37. Yahoo reports Wong will play a prisoner commentating on a fight, and says Capcom contacted him directly for the bit-part. IGN adds further detail: Wong appears alongside IFC Yipes and Maximilian Dood as criminals in an apparent Shadaloo prison, watching Blanka (Jason Momoa) and Ryu (Andrew Koji) brawl for M. Bison's viewing pleasure.
Commentating behind bars, betting on ramen
IGN reports that director Kitao Sakurai made sure the fighting game community felt represented, and that Wong and Yipes literally commentate the Ryu–Blanka match on screen — betting on commissary rations like ramen noodles and toilet paper. Per IGN, Wong also worked with makeup artists on the number 37 tattoo and joked his character went to prison for stabbing someone who kept parrying him: 'You can't parry a knife.' IGN says Wong even taught Noah Centineo (Ken) some moves after Centineo recognized him from the famous match.
Why Moment 37 still matters
As Yahoo explains, Evo Moment 37 refers to the 2004 tournament match between Wong's Chun-Li and Daigo Umehara's Ken. With a sliver of health left, Daigo parried all 15 hits of Chun-Li's Super before striking back for an improbable win — a clip Yahoo says has accrued hundreds of millions of views in the decades since. The movie goes beyond this single homage: Yahoo reports there will be references spanning all six mainline Street Fighter games.
Dedication to the source material
The devotion extends to the cast, too. Yahoo reports that Chun-Li actor Callina Liang told Empire magazine she downloaded every version of Street Fighter on PS5, recorded Chun-Li's moves in slow motion to study, and trained daily in Taekwondo, Muay Thai and wushu — bulking up on 12 eggs a day until her thighs grew six-and-a-half centimeters each. IGN adds that a prop resembling Mike Haggar's pipe was spotted on set, a nod to Final Fight's shared universe. Street Fighter hits theaters October 16, 2026.
