Producers announced the Tony-winning Cuban musical will end its Broadway run January 17, 2027, as a West End debut takes shape for 2027.
A Closing Date Comes to the Schoenfeld
"Buena Vista Social Club" will play its final performance at Broadway's Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on January 17, 2027, according to Broadway News.
The musical, directed by Saheem Ali with Tony-winning choreography by Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck and a book by Marco Ramirez, began Broadway performances on February 21, 2025 and officially opened March 19, 2025.
At closing, it will have played 767 regular performances and 27 preview performances. Deadline reports that producers say the show has not yet recouped its reported $17 million investment but is "on schedule" to do so.
Why a Close Now Is Surprising
The announcement is striking because the show remains one of Broadway's sturdier attractions and has already spawned three other productions.
Deadline notes the musical has attracted the highest number of Hispanic ticket buyers in the history of The Shubert Organization, and lead producer Orin Wolf celebrated it as the first Broadway score performed exclusively in Spanish.
Still, Deadline reports weekly grosses have dimmed considerably since last year's peaks, when the show often grossed above $1 million; the week ending November 1 brought $678,878 with attendance at 89% of the Schoenfeld's capacity.
The Evidence: Awards and Box Office
The production's trophy case explains why fans may resist the news.
It was nominated for 10 Tony Awards in 2025 including Best Musical, per Broadway News, and won four competitive awards: Best Choreography for Delgado and Peck, Best Featured Actress for Natalie Venetia Belcon, Best Orchestrations for Marco Paguia, and Best Sound Design for Jonathan Deans, with a Special Tony Award for the onstage band.
Deadline adds that the cast album won a Grammy Award. London Theatre notes the show followed an acclaimed 2023 Off-Broadway run at Atlantic Theater Company.
A Company in Motion Until the End
The final months bring cast changes fans will want to track. The production is currently led by Gina Torres as Omara, with Rick Negron as Compay and Mel Semé as Ibrahim, alongside a Tony-honored Afro-Cuban band that features New York Yankees legend Bernie Williams on guitar.
A Global Franchise Takes Shape
The closing does not mean the music stops.
Deadline reports four productions are up and running this weekend: on Broadway, on a North American tour currently at the Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas, at the Antonio Paoli Festival Hall in Puerto Rico, and at the Teatro de los Insurgentes in Mexico City.
West End Best Friend frames those four simultaneous companies as illustrative of the reach of the celebrated music. Wolf, quoted by Deadline, points ahead to the tour, special engagements in Mexico and Puerto Rico, and a film.
What Comes Next: London in 2027
London is the next landmark. London Theatre reports the multi award-winning musical will make its West End debut in 2027, its first time in London, moving from the 1950s to the 1990s in Havana and telling how four musicians reunited to record the 1997 Grammy-winning album "Buena Vista Social Club."
Per Deadline, the West End production is scheduled to begin in 2027, after the final Broadway performance on January 17. The score's son, danzón, and bolero styles, as London Theatre describes them, will reach a new audience even as Broadway says farewell.
