Jack Campbell remains hospitalized with a neck injury, but the Lions say preliminary indications are positive.

What Happened

Detroit Lions All-Pro linebacker Jack Campbell remains hospitalized for evaluation and monitoring of a neck injury sustained during Sunday's 19-15 win over the Minnesota Vikings, per the team. He was injured making his third tackle of the game, on tight end T.J.

Hockenson on the first play of the fourth quarter, and stayed face down on the turf before being strapped to a backboard and carted off to applause. ESPN reports he was alert and breathing when taken to the hospital.

The Monday Update

On Monday afternoon the team stated: "Jack Campbell continues to rest and recover at a local hospital. Preliminary indications are positive and out of respect for Jack and his family we will not share further information at this time."

That statement, published on the Lions' official site by Tim Twentyman, marks the clearest sign yet of optimism after Sunday's frightening scene, in which the entire roster surrounded the medical cart before Campbell was driven to the tunnel.

Coach's Hospital Visit

Head coach Dan Campbell went to the hospital Sunday night, and so did many of Jack's teammates, the team's site reports. "I got to go see him last night. It was good. It was positive," the coach said Monday, adding that he met Jack's parents and wife and that "everybody is in good spirits."

He also urged fans to keep praying, saying, "It's positive. Your prayers are working. Please continue to do that."

Why It Matters

Campbell is the unquestioned leader of Detroit's defense and a team captain whom coach Campbell called "all heart and all effort," saying there is "not a man on this team that doesn't respect Jack Campbell."

ESPN notes he signed a four-year extension in May running through 2030, after an All-Pro season in which he became the first NFL player in seven years with 150-plus tackles, at least five sacks and three forced fumbles. His absence from the huddle will be felt, the coach said.

What Comes Next

The Lions now prepare for a road game at Miami on Sunday while carrying Campbell with them in spirit. "I think we balance it," coach Dan Campbell said, explaining the team will acknowledge the situation while getting ready for the Dolphins.

According to ClickOnDetroit, the injury halted the Vikings game for several minutes and the defense also lost Brian Branch and D.J. Wonnum during the contest, so Detroit's depth will be tested as it chases an NFC North title.
