& Juliet will end its four-year Stephen Sondheim Theatre run on January 3, 2027, closing among Broadway's 50 longest-running musicals.

The Closing Date Is Set

Broadway's jukebox musical "& Juliet" will play its final performance at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on January 3, 2027, ending a run of more than four years.

According to TicketNews, the show began previews on October 28, 2022, and officially opened on November 17, and by closing night it will have played 1,723 regular performances and 20 previews — a total that places it among the 50 longest-running musicals in Broadway history.

Producers Theresa Steele Page and Eva Price said in a statement, per TicketNews, "We're incredibly proud of the run we've had on Broadway."

Why the Numbers Make This Run Remarkable

What makes the announcement surprising to theatergoers is how the run stacks up financially. TicketNews reports the production has grossed more than $175 million and welcomed more than 1.5 million audience members during its Broadway engagement.

In 2024, it became the first new musical from its Broadway season to recoup its investment — a notable feat for a jukebox show.

The musical, written by David West Read with songs from producer Max Martin's pop catalogue, received nine Tony Award nominations in 2023, including Best Musical, with original cast members Lorna Courtney and Betsy Wolfe nominated for their performances as Juliet and Anne, according to TicketNews.

A Star-Studded Final Months

The closing announcement lands just as a headline cast change begins. broadway.com reports that Aly Michalka and Tichina Arnold make their Broadway debuts in "& Juliet" on November 3 as Anne and Angélique, respectively, joined by Tony winner James Monroe Iglehart reprising his role as Lance.

The three succeed Alison Luff, Jeannette Bayardelle and Joey Fatone.

Michalka, half of the duo Aly & AJ and known from "Phil of the Future," "Hellcats" and "iZombie," shares the stage with Arnold of "Everybody Hates Chris" and "The Neighborhood" fame, while Iglehart — the Tony-winning Genie from "Aladdin" — returns after his Tony-nominated turn as Louis Armstrong in "A Wonderful World."

The Stakes and What Comes Next

For fans, the next three months become a limited-engagement window.

broadway.com notes the current company is led by Gianna Harris as Juliet, with Spencer Sutherland as Romeo, Corey Mach as Shakespeare, Cyrus Veyssi as May and Anthony Gargiula as François, and the show's Max Martin-driven score still packs hits like "Since U Been Gone," "...Baby One More Time" and "I Want It That Way."

TicketNews adds that the brand has expanded well beyond New York: stagings have reached 73 U.S. cities, 34 states and Washington, D.C., international productions have reached nine countries across four continents, and the North American tour is scheduled to continue through November 2026 — so Broadway closes, but the phenomenon keeps moving.
