Kayem Foods is recalling about 1,584,361 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry nationwide after a warehouse cooler malfunctioned, the FSIS says.
What Happened: A Cooler Failure Triggers a Massive Recall
Kayem Foods Inc. is voluntarily recalling approximately 1,584,361 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products after discovering a cooling system malfunction at one of its warehouses that caused storage temperature deviations, according to a recall announcement from the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service.
The company says the issue came to light after a retail customer complained of warm product temperatures at the point of delivery on Oct. 1; an investigation traced the products to a warehouse cooler that had experienced temperature deviations.
The FSIS announced the recall on Oct. 17, and outlets including today.com, Top Class Actions and AOL/USA TODAY all report the same scope: hot dogs, bacon, sausages and deli meats sold nationwide and even shipped to Hong Kong.
Why It Stands Out: A Broader, Quieter Risk Than Contamination
What makes this recall notable for food watchers is the cause: not a pathogen, but "temperature abuse during storage," a phrase the FSIS uses and Top Class Actions describes as fluctuations that may lead to spoilage. Products were produced between March 31 and Oct.
7, 2026, with expiration dates spanning May 2026 to February 2027 — meaning potentially affected items could still be sitting in consumers' refrigerators and freezers. No illnesses have been confirmed, per the FSIS, but inspectors are concerned shoppers may still have the products at home.
today.com also frames the recall against a backdrop of "recall fatigue," as food safety concerns pile up in the headlines.
The Products: Hot Dogs, Bacon, Sausages and Deli Meats
The recall spans many brands: Kayem, Al Fresco, McKenzie, Triple M, Deutschmacher, Jordan's, Essem and Winnisimmet.
today.com lists specific items including Kayem Old Tyme Beef & Pork Frankfurters, Kayem Fenway Franks, Kayem Slow Smoked Applewood Thick Cut Bacon, Al Fresco Spinach and Feta Chicken Sausage, McKenzie Black Forest Uncured Ham, Triple M Chef's Delight Tavern Ham and Deutschmacher Honey Ham, among others.
Affected products bear establishment numbers EST. M/P 7839, EST.
P 20935A or EST. M 9520 inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The full product list and label photos are available on the FSIS website.
Where It Was Sold: Walmart and Stop & Shop Weigh In
The FSIS says the products were shipped to grocery stores and foodservice locations across the U.S. without naming specific retailers.
today.com reports, however, that Walmart confirmed affected products were sold in stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont, and says Walmart has implemented a sales block at registers and online.
today.com also reports Stop & Shop confirmed affected products in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and select Connecticut stores, and said stores in New York and New Jersey were not impacted. Walmart says customers may return the products to any store for a full refund.
What To Do Now: Discard, Return, and Watch for Next Steps
The FSIS urges anyone who purchased the recalled hot dogs, deli meats or other products not to eat them; instead, dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase.
Kayem Foods President and CEO Matt Monkiewicz said in a statement quoted by today.com: "Out of an abundance of caution, we are undertaking this voluntary recall," adding that management takes full responsibility and has "learned from and corrected the issue."
Consumers can contact Kayem Foods Customer Service between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET, Monday to Friday, at 1-800-426-6100 or by email, per sources in the pack.
Top Class Actions notes the company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, and the FSIS is conducting recall effectiveness checks to ensure products are no longer available.
