Ukraine struck Russian oil refineries in the Samara region again, ending a nearly two-week pause that had come under pressure from President Trump.

Dawn attack on Samara refineries

Ukraine resumed its campaign against Russian oil refineries overnight into Friday, launching a major dawn drone offensive on facilities in the Samara region, according to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak.

Samara Governor Viacheslav Fedorischev blamed Kyiv for the strike on the Novokuibyshevsk refinery, saying on Russian state messaging app Max that the attack used 'a record number of drones' and caused no casualties.

Novak said facilities hit included three refineries and a natural gas and petrochemical processing complex, while insisting air defenses had worked well. Ukrainian defense company Fire Point teased the strike on Telegram, writing that the Novokuibyshevsk refinery 'welcomes guests from Ukraine.'

Why the timing is striking

The offensive marks a sharp reversal after nearly two weeks without refinery strikes.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Kyiv had agreed to pause attacks on Russian oil refineries under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, with the unofficial halt expected to last until after the U.S. midterm elections on Nov. 3.

politico.eu reports that Ukraine had earlier paused such strikes for 72 hours when Trump announced an energy ceasefire, but the Kremlin kept bombarding Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy told reporters, 'That didn't help.

There was all kinds of rhetoric, and no one thanked us for those three days,' and later said his forces had no orders not to strike oil refineries.

Evidence of the scale

Moscow's Ministry of Defense reported Friday that Russian air defense forces shot down 1,043 Ukrainian drones over Samara and 18 other Russian regions overnight, a figure politico.eu attributes to the ministry.

In the Samara region, Kyiv Mayor-linked official Sergei Sobyanin reported, per EL PAÍS's aggregated reporting, that Kyiv launched 862 aerial devices against Moscow's direction, with around 170 destroyed on the outskirts of the capital.

politico.eu also reports that independent Russian media channel Astra documented a fire at the Novokuibyshevsk refinery, which Rosneft says can produce about 8.8 million metric tons of oil per year and supplies jet fuel to the Russian army. Ukraine has not formally claimed the strike.

Russia retaliates and talks hang on

Over the same night, Russia attacked Ukraine with ballistic missiles and more than 100 drones, killing one person in Kyiv and leaving 350,000 people without electricity in Dnipro, politico.eu reports.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhi Koretski said the enemy's main objective was energy and warned that repair work in Dnipro and Kyiv would take time, with the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy calling the damage 'considerable.'

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the refinery attacks did not endanger budding trilateral peace talks and maintained that Russia wants a complete end to the conflict rather than a ceasefire.
