A Royal Canadian Air Force crew hoisted a sick cruise ship passenger from a vessel far off Port Hardy and flew them to Comox for care.
What happened: a hoist rescue at sea
On Sept. 8, 19 Wing Comox's 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron was deployed under the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria to evacuate an injured crew member from a cruise ship sailing roughly 182 kilometres northwest of Port Hardy, according to the Comox Valley Record. A CH-149 Cormorant helicopter, callsign RSCU 915, and a CC-295 Kingfisher, callsign RSCU 503, were tasked together. The Kingfisher coordinated the medevac with the cruise ship's captain and provided overwatch, while the Cormorant lowered two search and rescue technicians onto the ship's deck to take over care of the patient and prepare them for the flight.
