Sylvester Stallone says Schwarzenegger's 2003 exit from Hollywood for California politics finally ended their two-decade rivalry.
Stallone names the turning point
Sylvester Stallone told The Rest Is Entertainment podcast that the feud with Arnold Schwarzenegger 'wasn't put to bed until like 20 years,' and that the turning point came in 2003, when Schwarzenegger left acting to run for California governor.
Per Entertainment Weekly's report of the appearance, Stallone recalled thinking: 'I said, enough of this. We're not in competition.
He was not doing movies anymore. All right.
Thank you very much for waking me up, lighting a fire under me. And he felt the same way.'
Primetimer reports the podcast appearance was on November 5.
A rivalry so cold they couldn't share a stage
What makes the reconciliation striking is how total the estrangement was. Stallone said the pair 'couldn't get on the same stage together to make a presentation or a speech.'
Primetimer notes that for much of the 1980s the two competed for the crown of Hollywood's biggest action star, with Rocky, Rambo, The Terminator and Predator defining their reputations, and that the rivalry reportedly grew so tense the actors struggled to appear together at public events.
The 1977 Golden Globes origin story
According to Yahoo, the bad blood originally ignited at the 1977 Golden Globes, where 'Rocky' entered with six nominations but took only one win, Best Motion Picture – Drama, while Schwarzenegger won New Star of the Year for 'Stay Hungry.'
Yahoo reports Stallone alleged the 'Predator' star laughed as 'Rocky' missed five categories, and that event reports indicated an enraged Stallone threw a bowl of flowers after the Best Picture announcement.
Primetimer separately quotes Schwarzenegger telling The Graham Norton Show in 2023 that they tried to outdo each other in bodies, on-screen kills and biggest guns.
From enemies to Expendables co-stars
Yahoo and Primetimer both report the reconciliation eventually reached the screen: after Schwarzenegger extended an invitation to one of his gubernatorial inaugurations, he returned with a cameo in Stallone's 2010 hit 'The Expendables,' leading to co-starring roles in 'The Expendables 2' (2012), 'Escape Plan' (2013) and 'The Expendables 3' (2014).
Yahoo adds that Stallone, at an October 10 PaleyFest NY panel, framed their old friction as fuel, saying 'We're good friends now. We've gotten mellow,' and that competition between actors 'continues to up your game.'
Feuds as the celebrity story that keeps giving
The Stallone reveal lands the same week Female First reports Alabama Barker told stepmother Kourtney Kardashian on The Kardashians that she and brother Landon have patched up their own roughly four-week falling-out, admitting the siblings 'never spoke about it' — she says she found something out and told their father, Travis Barker, and Landon 'didn't like that.'
Female First also recalls Kourtney's own famous clash with Kim over the Dolce & Gabbana wedding partnership, and Kim's insistence in a confessional that the 'huge misconception' they hate each other is wrong. Feuds, it seems, end as quietly as they begin.
