- Trial Verdict
Russell Brand was found guilty of rape and sexual assault at London's Southwark Crown Court on Thursday and now faces a 'significant' prison term.
What Happened in Court on Thursday
A jury of eight men and four women found Russell Brand guilty on four of seven charges — one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving four women — at London's Southwark Crown Court, per CNN and the Los Angeles Times.
The panel acquitted the 51-year-old of two separate counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault after deliberating roughly eight and a half hours over two days. Brand stood straight in the dock and closed his eyes as the guilty verdicts were read, CNN reports.
Why This Verdict Stuns the Comedy World
The Guardian frames the conviction as the end of a long, unlikely arc: a comedian whose shocking sexual revelations once gave him currency — voted "shagger of the year" three years running by the Sun — was praised for a memoir that described behavior now read as harbinger.
The Guardian reports critics lavished that 2007 memoir with praise and it topped the Sunday Times bestseller list, while a 2025 BBC review found complaints about Brand were not appropriately dealt with and staff believed he was untouchable.

CNN's clip captures London's Metropolitan Police speaking to reporters moments after the guilty verdicts, saying Brand used his influence, status and fame to prey on and exploit women.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy called the conviction "a testament to the extraordinary courage, resilience and determination of the women who came forward," adding that as Brand's profile grew, so too did his sense of entitlement.
The Evidence Jurors Heard
CNN reports the convicted counts covered four incidents: raping a 21-year-old fan in 2009 after she met him at a west London show, groping an MTV worker at a central London bar in 2004, kissing and groping a woman at her workplace in 2005, and sexually assaulting a woman forced to give him a massage in 2009.
The Los Angeles Times adds that prosecutors read from Brand's own 2007 memoir, in which he wrote he would "determinedly, resolutely, remove anything that's in the way, until I possess the object of my desire."
The Stakes: Custody, Bail Denied, More Charges Possible
Brand was taken into custody after the judge rejected his bail request, with the Los Angeles Times citing concerns he might flee from Florida, where he had relocated. Judge Joel Bennathan said the case carries "inevitably a significant custodial term," per PBS.
The Met also confirmed to CNN that investigations continue into two further rape allegations, and prosecutors are assessing whether to bring additional charges — meaning the legal reckoning may not be finished.
What Comes Next: Sentencing Monday
PBS notes Brand denied the charges and testified he was once obsessed with sex but never forced anyone against their will; his wife Laura Gallacher testified as a character witness, while Brand told jurors no one with relevant evidence would testify on his behalf.
The Los Angeles Times reports his defense argued a 2023 documentary investigation had "corrupted and contaminated" the well of justice, framing the case comedians and fans will be dissecting for years.
