According to The Economic Times, Merriam-Webster added 1,400 new words and definitions, calling the update "a glow-up to our iconic dictionary." The publisher said the entries reflect how language has evolved across technology, social media, popular culture, food and everyday life, and that only terms demonstrating widespread use over time made the cut. Additions span the full cultural spectrum, from AI vocabulary like vibe coding and AGI to lifestyle terms like cuffing season and Sunday scaries, food words like bao and chili crisp, and internet-born entries like copium and trash panda — a nickname for a raccoon.

The Economic Times reports that technology and artificial intelligence account for some of the most notable additions, including vibe coding, AGI as a term for artificial general intelligence, compute as a noun for computing resources, and uncanny valley for the unease felt toward almost-human artificial things. Social media culture is also richly represented: parasocial describes one-sided emotional connections, looksmaxxing refers to attempts to improve physical appearance, Rickroll is shorthand for the prank linking people to Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up," and meme coin names a cryptocurrency tied to an internet joke. The Mandela Effect — a shared false memory — and copium, denial imagined as a narcotic, round out the internet-bred lexicon.

The dictionary's recognition of meme coin lands as the category itself keeps reshuffling.
