An 86-year-old sailor and his dog were rescued alive about 460 miles off San Diego after more than two months without contact during a Pacific voyage.

Two Months Silent, Then a Beacon in the Dark

An 86-year-old sailor and his dog were found alive on October 28, roughly 460 miles off the coast of San Diego, California, after spending more than two months without any contact with the outside world.

According to Dexerto, the man had been sailing aboard his vessel, Willow Wind, from Astoria, Oregon, to Pago Pago, American Samoa, when he went silent. Nobody had heard from him since August 20, and authorities were notified he was overdue on October 24.

Three days later, an emergency beacon registered to Willow Wind transmitted a distress signal, and a Coast Guard aircraft located the damaged sailboat that same evening.

A 14-Hour Rescue Through Rough Seas

Dexerto reports that the commercial vessel Grand Orion reached the scene around 3:20 AM on October 28, but rough sea conditions initially prevented its crew from reaching the stranded pair.

After more than 14 hours of effort, rescuers finally brought both the man and his dog aboard at approximately 5:36 PM. The following morning, a Coast Guard helicopter hoisted them from the Grand Orion — by then about 170 miles west of Ventura, California — and transported them to San Diego.

The Newser account of the rescue emphasizes that both sailor and dog came out of the ordeal alive.

Weak but Standing: A Survival That Defies Odds

The surprise is not just that he survived, but his condition: Dexerto reports that the 86-year-old suffered no major injuries despite the ordeal, though he was described as weak and having difficulty walking before being taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital for evaluation.

His dog's condition was not detailed, but both survived. Authorities have not revealed what caused the voyage to go wrong or how the pair managed to survive for so long without contact — questions that make the story all the more remarkable.

The damaged sailboat was left drifting at sea.

Gratitude and a Run of Sea Rescues

"We are grateful to the merchant mariners and Coast Guard crews whose coordinated efforts brought this search to a successful conclusion," Coast Guard Commander Jason Nguyen said, per Dexerto.

The story caps a string of dramatic ocean survivals: Dexerto notes that in August, two fishermen survived five days stranded in the Pacific using a large cooler as a makeshift boat, and that earlier this year Bruce the German Shepherd was rescued after drifting nearly 2.5 miles out to sea in an inflatable kayak.

For now, the sailor and his dog are safe — and together.
