Apple unveiled its first foldable, the iPhone Duo, opening a 7.6-inch screen at $1,999 with pre-orders in over 70 countries starting October 16, 2026.

The Reveal: Apple's First-Ever Foldable iPhone

Apple announced the iPhone Duo at its September 9, 2026 products event, its first-ever foldable smartphone. The device folds open like a book into one continuous screen that Apple says is 80% larger than the latest iPhone Pro and the thinnest iPhone ever when opened. It comes in two colors, Star White and Night Sky, and starts at $1,999, with pre-orders beginning October 16 and stores on October 23. It was also the debut moment for new Apple CEO John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook on September 1 after 25 years at the company.

The Specs Gadget Fans Have Been Waiting For

The iPhone Duo opens to a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR main display with a nano-texture coating to reduce glare, plus a 5.4-inch outer display, both supporting ProMotion, Always-On and up to 3,000 nits of brightness, according to RS Web Solutions. It runs the A20 Pro chip with vapor chamber cooling, uses a dual battery system rated for up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, and charges to 50% in about 20 minutes by cable. The Grade 5 titanium hinge has over 100 components, there is a 48 MP Dual Fusion camera system, and iOS 27 brings Split View for two apps at once.

Why It's Surprising: Samsung's Billboard Troll

Samsung answered Apple's reveal within days with a 'Welcome to Foldables' billboard campaign in Seoul, Tokyo and London promoting the Galaxy Z Fold8 as 'The World's Lightest Fold.' Gadget Review reports Samsung Mobile US also posted 'Let us know when you're done reheating our leftovers' during Apple's announcement. The twist: Samsung Display, a separate business unit, reportedly supplied the foldable screen technology inside the iPhone Duo itself, meaning Samsung is supplying a core component to a rival handset division.

The China Battleground Against Huawei

China is the world's largest foldable market, accounting for over a third of global sales, and it is dominated by Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and Honor. The Wall Street Journal, as reported by JKN, notes Huawei's Pura X Max sales jumped roughly 77% in the four days after Apple's announcement, with over 1.4 million units sold since April. Xiaomi's '18 Fold' recorded its highest-ever first-week foldable sales. The iPhone Duo is priced at 15,999 yuan in China, about $2,400, and Chinese consumers like 18-year-old Wang Rui told the WSJ that 'Apple hasn't reached this level yet.'

The Stakes: A 2% Market Apple Could Reshape

Foldables remain a niche: global shipments were roughly 20 million units last year, under 2% of all smartphones, according to Counterpoint Research figures cited by JKN. Yet Counterpoint projects Apple could sell up to 6 million iPhone Duo units this year, taking about 25% of the global foldable market and surpassing Huawei's 22%, while Samsung holds the top spot at around 38%. Apple's entry could accelerate the market's growth, though high prices, memory chip cost inflation and strong local Chinese competitors remain the variables to watch.

What Comes Next

Pre-orders open October 16 in more than 70 countries and regions including the US, China, India, Japan, South Korea, the UK and much of Europe, with retail sales on October 23, according to RS Web Solutions; Indonesia is absent from the initial rollout. Apple plans Apple Pencil support via USB-C for the Duo by the end of 2026. With Samsung's Z Fold8 reported at roughly $1,899 and Huawei's Mate XT2 tri-fold starting near $3,000, the next two years of foldable pricing, hinge durability and thinness competition now run directly through Cupertino.
