Dow futures jumped 803 points after Democrats swept Congress and Trump accepted the results, even as AI chip stocks slid on data-center fears.

What happened: a decisive sweep, and a futures surge

Stock futures ripped higher on Wednesday morning after Democrats won majorities in both the House and Senate in the midterm elections, and President Trump said he was willing to accept the results.

According to CNBC, futures tied to the Dow jumped 803 points, or 1.5%, with S&P 500 futures up 1% and Nasdaq-100 futures gaining 0.5% — a sharp reversal from a steep overnight selloff.

TradingView reported narrower premarket gains for the same indices, and Fox Business also showed futures edging up after sharp early losses, so the exact size of the move differed by publisher and hour.

Why it surprised: markets love gridlock

The rally defied the pre-election fear that a Democratic sweep would weigh on stocks, especially artificial-intelligence-linked names.

"Markets hate uncertainty more than they dislike whatever party is in place," Jason Katz told Fox Business, while Andrew Slimmon of Morgan Stanley said markets "like gridlock — they don't like a party with too much power."

CNBC quoted Freedom Capital Markets' Jay Woods crediting Trump's conciliatory tone, noting that divided government historically produces fewer policy disruptions. Ryan Detrick's data, cited by TradingView, says a split Congress has delivered a 15.1% average annual S&P 500 return.

Winners and losers: renewables rally, chips tumble

Economy-linked stocks led the early gains, with Walmart up 2% and Bank of America rising 1.9% per CNBC.

Health insurers and hospitals surged — Molina Healthcare added 6.3%, Centene climbed roughly 5%, and HCA Healthcare rose 7.16% — while renewables soared on hopes of a policy shift: First Solar gained 8.5%, Plug Power rose 10.6%, and Europe's Oersted jumped 7.3% and Vestas 5.2%.

The casualties were AI infrastructure names: Oracle, CoreWeave and Elon Musk's SpaceX headed lower after Gina Hinojosa won the Texas governorship, per CNBC, having pledged an immediate moratorium in the key data-center hub.

CNBC also reported Asian chip stocks tumbled, with Softbank down over 8% and Disco down 10.19%.

Rates, dollar and gold react

Treasury yields moved lower, with Fox Business reporting the 10-year yield fell 6 basis points to 4.906% — a relief signal for rate-sensitive sectors. The dollar weakened broadly: according to CNBC, the euro rose 0.39% to $1.1235 and the pound gained 0.48% to $1.3476.

Precious metals surged, with CNBC reporting spot gold up 2.93% at $4,043.45 an ounce and silver jumping 4.44% to $51.98. Oil slipped about 1%, with Morgan Stanley's Slimmon suggesting a possible Middle East resolution could push prices lower.

TradingView pegged FedWatch odds of a December rate hike at 79.2%.

What comes next: earnings and history's warning

Earnings are compounding the election tape: TradingView reports AMD jumped 6.33% premarket after beating Q3 estimates, Arista Networks surged 9.75%, and Novo Nordisk rose 5.28% after a Wegovy-driven beat that lifted its outlook.

Still, Detrick's historical data cautions that a Republican president with a Democratic Congress — the new setup — has delivered the lowest historical market gains, averaging 4.9% annually.
