Wit Studio Defends Its Divisive One Piece Remake

Wit Studio's president says the One Piece remake is built for newcomers, with seven Baratie episodes streaming globally on Netflix from February 2027.

LEVEL UP reports that Wit Studio President Joji "George" Wada says the new One Piece anime is deliberately built as an approachable entry point for newcomers, in what he described as a simple and comfortable way into the franchise. Toei's long-running adaptation is fast approaching 1,170 episodes, a volume LEVEL UP characterizes as an intimidating barrier for anyone trying to catch up. Wada framed the series as a "national treasure of Japan" that the studio hopes to introduce to a new era of viewers, promising "fresh imagery clothed in the air of the present day."

According to LEVEL UP, many longtime fans find the idea of remaking a story whose original manga and TV anime are both still active redundant, if not downright baffling. The magazine notes Wit Studio believes it is uniquely equipped for the pressure: the studio previously adapted the initial seasons of Attack on Titan, which LEVEL UP calls one of the most successful global anime phenomena of the past decade. Wada told the outlet that a creator's desire to say something gives birth to characters, and that animation's world must ground emotional drama and give overflowing emotions a solid vessel.

LEVEL UP reports the remake's first season will run for seven episodes focusing on the fan-favorite Baratie Arc, with Wada declining to commit to a firm premiere date while reports confirm a global Netflix streaming debut beginning February 2027. That timing stacks up against other One Piece projects: the outlet says Netflix's live-action third season is also targeted for a 2027 debut, and the Toei anime is covering the Elbaph Arc before going on hiatus to shift to a seasonal broadcast schedule.

The remake arrives as the source material nears its finale. LEVEL UP reports that at One Piece Day 2026 in mid-August, creator Eiichiro Oda said he will need "at least" four more years to conclude the manga, pointing to a definitive end around 2030 as the story moves through the Elbaph Arc. Whether Wit's reimagining satisfies existing fans while winning newcomers, the outlet concludes, remains to be seen.
