Anime News Network reports that the live-action film of Hajime Kōmoto's Mashle: Magic and Muscles announced its star with an early teaser video and teaser visual on Thursday: Mackenyu Maeda will play Mash Burnedead, the muscle-bound boy who can't use magic in a world where magic is used for everything.

The film will open in Japan on March 19, 2027, with Warner Brothers and Fuji TV overseeing the project, CREDEUS producing, and TOHO distributing. The teaser visual's tagline, per ANN, reads "It's finally time for a movie adaptation."

Mashle's whole premise — muscles crushing magic, played for absurd comedy — is exactly the tonal tightrope Fukuda is known for walking. Casting Mackenyu Maeda, one of Japan's busiest manga-adaptation leading men, signals a production leaning into star power rather than a quiet IP cash-in.

ANN also frames the manga's premise in Shueisha's own description: a young man deep in the forest trains his body because he cannot use magic, until his peaceful life is put in danger.

The film lands atop an unusually complete adaptation history, as detailed by Anime News Network: the manga ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from January 2020 to July 2023, closing at 18 volumes in October 2023 alongside a fan book.

The anime's first season premiered in April 2023 for 12 episodes, and its second season followed in January 2024, with Crunchyroll streaming both and their English dubs.

A third season, Mashle: Magic and Muscles - Tri-Magicathalon Divine Visionary Final Exam Arc, arrives in January, which ANN says Crunchyroll will stream. The franchise also includes novels, two stage plays, and the Muscle Puzzle smartphone game launched in April 2025.

Viz Media and Shueisha's MANGA Plus publish the manga digitally in English.

The Mashle reveal lands in a crowded week for screen adaptations of manga.

Flickering Myth, meanwhile, reports that Netflix has released a trailer for Quiztopia, its dystopian sci-fi thriller based on Reiichi Sugimoto and Shinkichi Kato's manga Kokumin Kuizu, in which winners of a government-sanctioned quiz show get any wish granted and losers face severe penalties — until charismatic host KK, played by Takayuki Yamada, becomes the target of dissidents.

Flickering Myth says Quiztopia arrives on Netflix on December 17th.
