Netflix Renews 'The Beast in Me' Despite Limited-Series Label

Netflix has renewed the limited series The Beast in Me for a second season, with Claire Danes returning as Aggie Wiggs and Howard Gordon co-showrunning.

Netflix has officially renewed The Beast in Me for a second season, with Claire Danes confirmed to return as writer Aggie Wiggs, according to outlets including Seat42F, CultureCues, and Radio Times. Howard Gordon, who leads the show, will co-showrun season two alongside Daniel Pearle, and the renewal is the first project under a new exclusive creative partnership between Gordon and Netflix. Gordon said the team 'always told ourselves we'd only do a second season of The Beast in Me if we found a story that was worthy of the first – and I'm thrilled to say we found it.'

MovieWeb frames the renewal as a rare exception to Netflix's reputation for canceling shows early, calling the series arguably the best psychological thriller on the platform since Mindhunter. The outlet notes the original story reached a defined ending, and that several major characters introduced in season one are dead by the finale, meaning Gordon must invent an entirely new premise. Radio Times similarly flags that the drama was presented as a one-off miniseries, and points out that Matthew Rhys's character Nile was murdered in prison in the final episode, making his return unlikely outside flashbacks.

The case for continuation rests on strong performance. Netflix says the first season debuted at No. 1 on its Global Top 10 and reached the Top 10 in 88 countries, recording 43 million views across its first seven weeks, as CultureCues reports. CultureCues adds that composers Sean Callery and Sara Barone won an Emmy for the show's score. Claire Danes is the only cast member Netflix has confirmed, and she will also executive produce the new season alongside Gordon, Pearle, Antonio Campos, Caroline Baron, Amy Lippman, Gabe Rotter, Conan O'Brien, David Kissinger, Jeff Ross, and Jodie Foster, per Nexus Point News. No return has been announced for Matthew Rhys or any other season-one cast member, including Brittany Snow and Natalie Morales, whom TV Series Finale lists among the first-season stars. Seat42F reports that Netflix has not disclosed a filming schedule or episode count, so the shape of the ensemble remains open as production details are still to come.
