Netflix used the annual Stranger Things Day celebration — marking the date Will Byers vanished in 1983 — to officially order *Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure*, a live-action prequel to its biggest show.

The Duffer Brothers co-create the series with longtime *Stranger Things* writer Kate Trefry, who wrote *The First Shadow* stage play and has been on the show since Season 2.

Trefry serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer, while the Duffers produce through Upside Down Pictures alongside Shawn Levy's 21 Laps, Paul Dichter, Shelley Meals, Andrea Sperling and Pavlina Hatoupis. The Duffers called seeing the project become real 'surreal and exhilarating.'

After a finale that left some critics cold — USA Today TV critic Kelly Lawler called the ending 'more of a whimper than a bang' — fans were bracing for a long silence.

The Duffers told Deadline the spinoff will keep the franchise's 'brand' and 'style of storytelling' rather than expand an 'insanely convoluted mythology,' with 'connective tissue' but an almost anthologizing approach.

The Hollywood Reporter notes the Duffers' own sign-off — 'watch the skies, nerds!' — strongly suggests a UFO or outer-space theme.

The Economic Times describes an abandoned bicycle near a restricted area, with an unusual disturbance in the sky resembling a wormhole; The Sunday Guardian adds an old radio playing and ominous clouds that flash bright light.

The clip also ties back to the stage play: according to The Economic Times, Matt Duffer told Variety the spin-off will explain the mysterious rock young Henry Creel finds in a scientist's briefcase in the Nevada caves — an object that resurfaced in Season 5 of the flagship series.

The video element of this announcement matters because Netflix is drip-feeding details through visual clues rather than plot synopses.

Outlets are already combing the short teaser for the date stamp, the restricted-area signage and the sky disturbance, and the Duffers' coy statement — 'new… actually, we're not allowed to say any more' — has turned the clip itself into the primary source of story information until casting is revealed.

The stakes are enormous: *Stranger Things* ran five seasons from 2016, won 13 Primetime Emmys, and racked up more than 1.2 billion views across its first four seasons per Netflix.
