Study Links Warming to Deadly Nepal Glacier Collapse

A new World Weather Attribution study finds human-caused warming thinned glaciers and thawed permafrost, helping prime the deadly Nepal-Tibet slope collapse.
What happened: the Langtang Lirung disaster
On August 26, roughly 116 million cubic metres of rock and glacier ice broke away from Langtang Lirung mountain at about 5,150 metres, plunging around 1,400 metres before turning into a debris flood. More than 1,400 people are confirmed dead across Nepal and Tibet, with over 6,600 still missing, and Nepal estimates reconstruction costs near $5 billion.
Why the finding is a first
This is the first scientific assessment of the disaster, and it breaks from the usual attribution format. Rather than measuring how much a single weather event was intensified by warming, the World Weather Attribution team identified a 'compound crisis': long-term warming, glacier retreat, permafrost thaw and geological instability interacting together. Researchers say there is 'absolutely no doubt' that human-induced climate change preconditioned the disaster through permafrost thawing, glacier thinning and more rain replacing snow. The study's title, 'Rapid Warming in the Himalaya Exacerbates Geohazard Cascades Beyond Adaptation Limits,' signals its central warning that adaptation alone cannot shield these valleys.
The evidence: warming weakened the slope
The study found the region has warmed about 2C since pre-industrial times, with July and August 2026 the warmest locally on record — roughly 5C above the 30-year average in the days before the collapse, including about 1.5C of warming attributed to human influence. The Himalayan freezing threshold has risen about 100 metres per decade since the 1980s, thawing permafrost that helps bind fractured mountain rock. Glaciers in the region have thinned by about half a metre a year, and the Langtang Lirung glacier has retreated roughly half a kilometre since the 1990s. Unusually heavy snowfall in late 2025 added meltwater, and the 2015 magnitude-7.8 earthquake may have further weakened the rock, though its precise role could not be confirmed.
Limits of adaptation exposed
The report concludes the catastrophe shows how some climate risks in the world's highest mountains exceed what early warning systems and adaptation can provide. Nepal has developed disaster risk reduction plans, but the size and speed of the collapse overwhelmed those defences — unlike rainfall floods, high-mountain slope failures occur suddenly and are extremely hard to predict. The study notes rock avalanches of this size are rare, with an estimated frequency of roughly one event every 1,000 to 10,000 years, and states that limits to adaptation are already being reached. Mountain hydrologist Walter Immerzeel of Utrecht University said the region is undergoing 'fundamental, irreversible shifts'.
Nepal's $20 million claim and fund shortfall
Nepal plans to use the study as the main basis of a request for around $20 million from the UN Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, which requires evidence that losses were climate-caused. According to the BBC, ministry spokesperson Maheshwar Dhakal said the report 'will be the main basis of our claim as it has detailed what role climate has played in this disaster.' The BBC also reports nearly 120 countries have submitted claims totalling close to $3 billion, while the fund has under $400 million allotted for disbursement. Fund officials meet in December to decide requests, including whether to make an urgent decision for Nepal.
What comes next on the diplomatic stage
Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah travels to New York from September 22–26 for the UN General Assembly — his first foreign trip since taking office — where he is expected to highlight the disaster, Himalayan vulnerability and climate justice, according to the Times of India. The Guardian reports Nepal's foreign minister Shisir Khanal has demanded top emitting nations such as China and India accept shared responsibility. Co-author Friederike Otto of Imperial College London stressed the most important step is rapidly stopping fossil fuel use, warning that permafrost and glacial melt will worsen and make events like this more frequent.
