7,000 Chicago Hotel Workers Vote to Authorize Historic Strike

Unite Here Local 1 members at 46 Chicago hotels voted 85% to authorize a strike that would be the largest in the city's history.

More than 7,000 unionized hotel workers in Chicago voted Monday night, Sept. 22, 2026, to authorize a strike, with 85% voting in favor according to Unite Here Local 1. The authorization covers room attendants, cooks, dishwashers, front desk agents, servers and food service workers at 46 hotels downtown and near McCormick Place, most of them operated by Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott International. Contracts at those hotels expired Aug. 31, and the union has been negotiating since June. With the vote complete, workers can now call a walkout at any time, and members began signing up for strike benefits at East-West University in the Loop the following day.

Unite Here Local 1 says a walkout would mark the largest hotel strike in Chicago's history based on scale, and the most significant labor movement in the city's hospitality industry since 2018, when workers at 26 hotels struck simultaneously and ultimately won year-round health coverage for themselves and their families. The Real Deal notes the 2018 action saw 97% of union hotel workers at upwards of 24 hotels vote to walk off the job, with major hotel groups reaching agreements within a month. Because bargaining agreements are separate per hotel chain, any new strike could come in waves, with some chains walking out before others.

The union's economic case rests on member surveys it has shared publicly. Per the union, nearly a third of workers said they did not have enough money to cover rent or a mortgage at some point in the last 12 months, two-thirds said their hours were cut during the slow period, and one in four took out a payday or other short-term loan to cover expenses, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Local 1 also says the hotel operators returned $22.3 billion to shareholders over the last three years. 'Tourism in Chicago is booming, all while inflation is increasing,' said union president Karen Kent, while room attendant Patricia Davila Garcia said her rent and bills had nearly doubled. It also comes a week after Seattle hotel workers with Unite Here Local 8 ratified a new contract ending an 85-day strike, and months after New York City hotel workers secured record wage increases in May, a pattern of escalating hotel labor leverage nationwide that hotels in Los Angeles may follow with a citywide ordinance pushing wages toward $30 per hour.

The Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association says it is 'deeply concerned' about the negative impact a work stoppage would have on employees, visitors, hotels and the city, calling Chicago's hotel industry an economic driver that supports tens of thousands of jobs and generates tax revenue that saves each Chicago household thousands of dollars. Association president Michael Jacobson says impacted hotels have 'robust contingency plans in place' and plan to remain open. Hyatt's head of labor relations for the Americas, Daniel Dring, said wages and benefits remain unchanged during negotiations and that the company has contingency plans of its own. The Sun-Times reports Hilton and Marriott did not respond to requests for comment, though Hotel Dive notes Hilton, Marriott and Hyatt did not respond by publication time either.

Negotiations are ongoing, and union members like Palmer House Hilton bartender Roushaunda Williams, a 26-year Hilton employee, say they remain hopeful a strike can be averted through good-faith bargaining. Separately in the same labor news cycle, SPEEA encouraged its Boeing engineering members to accept a new contract offering a 10% guaranteed wage increase, with voting open Sept. 24 through Oct. 4, and about 200 Cleveland Clinic Lutheran Hospital employees planned a Wednesday walkout if no agreement was reached by noon.
