'Patient Zero' Breaks Spotify Records as Critics Shrug

Taylor Swift's four new 'Encore' songs set two 2026 Spotify records, even as one reviewer calls the deluxe a 1/5 afterthought.

Taylor Swift released *The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore* on September 25, 2026, a deluxe edition of her 2025 album carrying four new tracks: "Cleveland!," "Pink Clouding," "Babylon," and lead single "Patient Zero." By the next morning, Spotify had confirmed two 2026 records: "Patient Zero" became the most-streamed song by a female artist in a single day this year, and Swift herself became the most-streamed female artist in a single day in 2026. Deadline reports all four songs occupied the top four spots on Spotify's Top 50 – Global list, with "Patient Zero" at 13,709,109 plays, "Cleveland" at 9,620,630, "Pink Clouding" at 8,785,117, and "Babylon" at 8,419,108. Swift wrote on Instagram that the songs were "born out of pure gratitude" after fans gave the original album the biggest first week for an album in history.

The surprise is the gap between the numbers and the reception. Paste Magazine notes the original *Life of a Showgirl* was already a record machine — biggest first-week unit sales, largest vinyl sales, the longest Billboard 200 run, and "The Fate of Ophelia" becoming Spotify's most-streamed song in history — so demand was always going to be immense. But per Deadline, the deluxe arrived after a surprise announcement early in the week, with no album campaign behind it, and still swept the global top four instantly.

Not everyone heard history in the songs. The North Texas Daily's review by Thomas Treviño rates *The Encore* 1/5, arguing the four tracks are "hollow" and play as though someone prompted an AI chatbot to "make four Taylor Swift songs." The reviewer says the original album's lyrical thinness had the rationale of tour fatigue, but *The Encore* has no such excuse, and calls "Babylon" the better of the deluxe — catchy, if only by contrast. Paste's companion piece is blunter still in its framing, titling its take that the four new songs are "The Encore that no one asked for." NME reports the 2025 album itself drew a mixed critical response, earning three stars from the outlet, so the deluxe is landing on an already contested record.

Adding noise to the moment, NME reports that veteran producer Todd Rundgren told Vulture that Taylor Swift is "of course" the artist he would parody on a 2026 album, that "there's an argument to be made that she ruined music," and that she is "the apotheosis of mediocrity." NME says Rundgren — whose credits include Meat Loaf's 'Bat Out of Hell' and XTC's 'Skylarking' — also argued female artists dominate pop because boys shifted spending to video games in the 1990s, and claimed Swift is "not a great singer," songwriter, or dancer.

For devoted listeners, the lyrics are the talking point. According to Yahoo Lifestyle Canada, "Cleveland!" declares new husband Travis Kelce the "love of [her] life" and name-drops his hometown, while "Patient Zero" offers a shoulder to a ex's new partner — prompting fan speculation it references Sophie Turner's 2023 split from Joe Jonas. Yahoo reports "Pink Clouding" finds Swift regretting how she treated a former partner, and "Babylon" laments "missing all the best parts" of a past relationship: "You never knew that it was Babylon 'til it was gone." Paste notes the songs were written in Sweden with Max Martin and Shellback during a trip to celebrate the original album's success.

The story is not finished. Paste adds Swift will receive the VMAs' first-ever Artist Director Honors, an award created for "artists who have pushed creative boundaries and developed a clear directorial voice," and is nominated for nine more awards including Artist of the Year and Video of the Year. Deadline notes a teaser clip plus cryptic words Swift spoke in an Emmy skit have fans already decoding for hidden messages, so expect Sunday's premiere to be treated as an album-length puzzle.
