Galliano's Zara Collection Lands With a Quiet Paris Pop-Up

John Galliano's first Re{form} Zara collection dropped October 1, unveiled in a Marais mansion that WWD describes as a museum-like experience rather than a typical drop.
The quiet drop inside a Paris mansion
Rather than a smash-and-grab retail frenzy, Zara staged its John Galliano debut as an intimate, by-appointment exhibition inside a historic hôtel particulier in the Marais, running from Thursday through Tuesday during Paris Fashion Week. WWD reports the space is set up as an immersive journey — a cobblestoned courtyard with a Wallace fountain, corner café and flower stand, leading into rooms blending period French architecture with a fun-house streak, including a video wall where a train appears to barrel through the room. Galliano himself described it, per WWD, as "an invitation into the mind of a couturier." Attendants with iPads summon garments to fitting rooms; there is no stock on the sales floor at all.
A collaboration that rewrites the rulebook
The premise is unusual for the high-street collaboration genre that Karl Lagerfeld's H&M tie-up kicked off more than two decades ago, as WWD frames it. Instead of designing new clothes, Galliano "re-authors" garments from Zara's own past seasons, cutting, dismantling and reassembling them into new creations. According to 10 Magazine, a shirt becomes a coat, trousers become sculpted breeches, and a lace dress becomes a jabot, with named techniques like The Flix, The Shi/ft and Deep Pockets. Vogue quotes Galliano explaining that the idea is that he will re-author the brand's archives, a process he calls "really sustainable from a creative point of view."
Les Incroyables return, at high-street prices
The collection reaches back to Galliano's own origin story: Les Incroyables, the flamboyant dandies of post-Revolutionary France and the title of his 1984 Central Saint Martins graduation show that launched his career. Wallpaper* notes his hallmarks throughout — bias cutting, trompe l'oeil layering, point d'esprit and tulle, plus Napoleonic naval coats and ceremonial hats made with milliner Stephen Jones. Steven Meisel shot the campaign.
Why the launch is so under-the-radar
WWD calls it among the more under-the-radar moments of Paris Fashion Week: a no-photo dinner with Marta Ortega Pérez, Inditex's non-executive chair, was described as a private social gathering rather than a media moment. The quiet approach lands less than a month after Galliano withdrew from the planned "John Galliano: Horizons" retrospective at the Met's Costume Institute, which had drawn backlash and donor pushback over his 2010 and 2011 drunken antisemitic outbursts and conviction. The Cut reports the Met exhibition was cancelled after the New York Times reported donors threatened to rescind gifts, and notes critics question the mainstream rebrand.
The stakes for Zara
Harper's Bazaar argues the collection is a meaningful marker for Zara, which is trying to shift perception away from disposable fast fashion toward the premium space, having recently worked with Steven Meisel, architect Baisi Guadagnino and designer Willy Chavarria. In its view, it is rare that a high-street collection feels special and truly collectable, and Zara has largely succeeded. The Cut strikes a more sceptical tone, questioning the need for a Galliano "garbage-bag" Tri-Chic bag at one of the world's largest fast-fashion purveyors.
What comes next
The collection drops October 1 at Zara flagships in Madrid and London and on zara.com, and The Hollywood Reporter expects the standout styles to move quickly given months of anticipation. More seasonal collections follow across the two-year deal, in which Galliano deconstructs and reconfigures clothes from the retailer's previous seasons, per Zara's description quoted by WWD. Vogue adds that Galliano is already working secretly in an atelier "somewhere around Paris" on work he says is beyond gender and beyond seasons — and musing, as he told the magazine, that act three of your life can be the most fun.
