Apple will integrate Alibaba's Qwen AI into Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence on Chinese iPhones starting with iOS 27.3 in December.
What happened: a system-level AI partnership
Alibaba Group has teamed up with Apple to bring its Qwen family of large language models into Apple Intelligence for the Chinese market, according to a Saturday report by China's state-run Xinhua news agency.
The integration will be available for testing in the latest iOS developer beta starting Nov. 4, 2026, and will launch with the official iOS 27.3 release in December, per reporting carried by The Express Tribune.
Qwen's AI capabilities will be built into several core Apple features, including Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence.
The feature will be available on compatible iPhones whose device location and Apple Account region are both set to China, which grounds the rollout squarely in the Chinese market.
Why it is a first for global hardware
The deal is notable because it marks the first time a major global consumer hardware maker has adopted a Chinese large language model as its primary system-level AI backbone in the Chinese market, according to Wang Xiaojie, an AI expert at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, as cited in Xinhua's report and relayed by Türkiye Today.
A system-level AI backbone refers to the core AI technology that runs across an operating system's built-in features, meaning Qwen would sit underneath everyday iPhone experiences rather than serving as an optional add-on app.
User choice and data commitments
Both reports stress that users remain in control of the integration. Users can choose whether to enable it and decide what information to share, and Alibaba said user requests and generated responses would not be used to train its AI models.
That commitment matters because system-level AI assistants process sensitive voice, text and camera data, and the promise of no training on user traffic addresses a common privacy concern around on-device and cloud AI services.
Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said the partnership would bring new AI-powered services to Chinese users, framing the deal as an expansion of consumer AI offerings in a market where Apple Intelligence availability has been limited.
What comes next: beta this week, December launch
The timeline is short and concrete: developers can test the Qwen-powered features in the latest iOS developer beta beginning Nov. 4, 2026, with a public rollout tied to the official iOS 27.3 release in December.
That means eligible Chinese users could be using Qwen-backed Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence within weeks of the announcement. The beta window gives developers a chance to probe how the integration behaves inside Apple's own apps before the general release.
