Amazon has rebuilt its entire Kindle family from the ground up, adding a first-of-its-kind reverse-stack display, aluminum backs, and new accessories.

What Amazon announced

On October 1, Amazon introduced a completely redesigned Kindle family: a new 6-inch Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Colorsoft, plus Kids versions of each. According to Amazon's announcement by Devices VP Kevin Keith, the team redesigned the devices from the ground up around a newly designed reverse-stack display construction — described as a first for the e-reader category. Every model now features a flush-front display with no raised border, seamless edge-to-edge color wrapping from front to back, and new colors including Ube, Alpine Sky, Seaglass Green, and Graphite, with Fig coming to e-readers for the first time.

Why this refresh stands out

This is not a routine spec bump: Amazon says Kindle has seen double-digit global growth for three consecutive years, with more than 720 billion pages read in 2025, and the company chose to rebuild the hardware architecture rather than incrementally update it. The move away from all-plastic bodies is notable — HotHardware reports the new lineup leans into recycled aluminum while slimming footprints, with the base Kindle dropping to 6.8mm thick and 140 grams, and the Colorsoft also thinner at 6.8mm and 204 grams than the previous generation. Aluminum backs, previously exclusive to Signature Editions, now reach the base Kindle for the first time.

The evidence: specs and pricing

The entry-level Kindle starts at $149.99 with 16GB, or $189.99 for a 32GB aluminum version, offering up to six weeks of battery life and 30% faster book opening, per Amazon. The Paperwhite keeps its 7-inch waterproof display with an adjustable warm light, up to 12 weeks of battery, and starts at $199.99, with a $249.99 Signature Edition adding 32GB, auto-adjusting front light, and pogo pin dock charging. The Colorsoft starts at $289.99, or $319.99 for the Signature Edition, using a light guide with nitride LEDs and micro-deflectors to improve color brightness and uniformity. Business Standard confirms the same US pricing and notes Amazon has not announced India availability yet.

New accessories, led by the Kindle Click

According to The American Bazaar, the Click enters a market where rivals already exist, including Rakuten Kobo's $29.99 Kobo Remote and the $29.99 BOOX Tappy, so Amazon is pricing slightly above competitors while positioning it as an official accessory. Other additions include a $79.99 magnetic Page-Turn Cover with physical buttons, a $59.99 Charging Dock for Signature Editions, and covers starting at $39.99.

Availability and the shopping window

The base Kindle, its aluminum version, and Kids Kindle are available starting today in the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Japan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, and Australia, per Amazon. The Paperwhite and Colorsoft go up for preorder on a rolling basis, and Mashable reports most models will not ship until their joint release on Wednesday, October 28, with the charging stand's launch date still unset. Mashable also notes the new prices match their predecessors, which had recently risen $30 to $50 due to the global memory shortage.

Stakes and what comes next

The refresh lands just before Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days sale on October 6-7, so early buyers face an immediate question of paying full price or waiting for potential discounts — Mashable says it will be watching for deals on the new models during the event. For Amazon, the bet is that distraction-free reading keeps accelerating; the company says kids with Kindles read on average more than an hour a day, and it is leaning on the 20th-anniversary moment with Kids versions bundling 12 months of Amazon Kids+. With preorders opening now and an October 28 ship date, the next signal will be whether the $34.99 Click and aluminum models drive upgrade demand.
