Martin Scorsese says the 2014 Sony hack killed his planned Angelina Jolie 'Cleopatra' film.
A Lost Epic Revealed
Martin Scorsese has revealed, in conversation with his daughter Francesca on Tribeca's original series 'Crafty,' that he came close to directing a Cleopatra film starring Angelina Jolie as the Egyptian queen.
According to Variety, he said the project was 'ruined' by the fallout from Seth Rogen's 2014 comedy 'The Interview' and the Sony hack that followed it. 'We were gonna do it.
We were ready on the script,' Scorsese recalled, adding, 'She was gonna be Cleopatra VII. It was gonna be really wild.'
How 'The Interview' Broke It
The chain of events, as Deadline reports it, began with 'The Interview,' the 2014 satire co-written and directed by Rogen and Evan Goldberg, in which James Franco and Rogen's characters are recruited by the CIA to assassinate Kim Jong Un.
Scorsese, speaking to Francesca, joked that Kim Jong Un 'got mad and blew up everybody at Columbia,' and quipped, 'Just because Kim Jong Un doesn't have a sense of humor.'
The Crafty Interview
Per Just Jared, the 83-year-old director also reflected on wanting to make a 'big Roman epic' he 'missed,' joking that Ridley Scott has now 'done them all.' The episode captures Scorsese still reeling, more than a decade later, from a hack that reshaped Hollywood's private business.
Leaked Emails Changed the Climate
Variety notes that while Rogen was not directly responsible for the cancellation, the hack's aftereffects poisoned the environment around the project.
Among the exposed emails was one from producer Scott Rudin to Sony's Amy Pascal calling Jolie 'a minimally talented spoiled brat,' a leak that rattled the studio relationships any Cleopatra epic would have needed.
Female First similarly reports the project 'fell apart in the wake of the Sony hack,' framing the leak as the reason a script that was ready simply never moved forward.
Life Imitating 'The Studio'
There is an extra meta twist Just Jared highlights: Scorsese cameoed as himself in the debut episode of Rogen's Apple TV series 'The Studio,' where Rogen's studio-head character ends up responsible for killing Scorsese's passion project — a Jonestown film.
Now the actor-comedian's real 2014 comedy stands blamed, however jokingly, for the director's Cleopatra. Deadline observes that Scorsese and Rogen have clearly moved on professionally, making the joke as much a friendly jab as a grievance, while hinting at art imitating life on the hit show.
What Comes Next
The story's afterlife is now editorial rather than cinematic: 'Crafty' continues as a Tribeca series, and Scorsese remains busy — Deadline separately reports he has joined Bahman Ghobadi's horror film 'Trees Are Watching' with Eva Green ahead of its Toronto bow.
The Cleopatra epic, scripted by Eric Roth, the writer of 'Killers of the Flower Moon' according to Variety, joins Hollywood's long list of might-have-beens. For film fans, the quote 'It was gonna be really wild' is the closest the project will ever come to a premiere.

- — Crafty Introduction
- — Francesca: What is a film you showed me way too young?
- — Marty: What's a film that shaped you that I didn't show you?
- — Francesca: What is a movie that you wish I would love but I still don't appreciate enough?
- — Marty: What's a movie I'm shocked you've never seen?
- — Francesca: What is one thing you're still trying to learn as a filmmaker?
- — Marty: What's something you do in your work that you think came from growing up around me?
- — Francesca: When was the last time you saw a movie and thought "Damn, I wish I had made that"?
- — Francesca: What is the most annoying habit I inherited from you?
The moment itself is on video: Tribeca's 'Crafty' series posted the episode in which Martin Scorsese, seated with his daughter Francesca, blames 'The Interview' and the Sony hack for killing Cleopatra and delivers the now-viral line 'tell Seth, because they ruined everything.'
Watching the exchange matters because the humor and affection between father and daughter — Francesca's lingering indignation, Scorsese's deflection into comedy — show a director treating one of his great unmade films as an old wound worth laughing about, twelve years after the hack that stopped it.
