Margaritaville at Sea Paradise delayed its Palm Beach return a day, extending its Nassau stay amid South Florida gale warnings.
What Happened: A Ship Stuck at Sea
Margaritaville at Sea Paradise will not make its scheduled Tuesday, Oct. 27 return to the Port of Palm Beach because of severe weather, according to a travel advisory from the cruise line and the port reported by TravelHost on AOL.
The ship, which had been sailing back from MSC Ocean Cay in the Bimini islands, is now expected Wednesday, Oct. 28, weather permitting.
The line apologized for the disruption, acknowledging it may affect passengers' travel plans.
Why It's Surprising: The Same Storm, Opposite Problems
It is a striking reversal from the earlier Halifax story: instead of a tropical cruise turning frigid, this system leaves passengers stranded longer in paradise. TravelHost notes the delayed guests get an unexpected extra day in Nassau on Oct.
27, with onboard beverage and WiFi packages extended free of charge. But the same weather shortens the next cruise — a three-night Nassau sailing that departs late.
Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas, which left Port Canaveral on Oct. 24, simply reordered its Nassau and Perfect Day CocoCay stops.
The Evidence: Gale Warnings Off Florida
The National Weather Service is warning of hazardous marine conditions along Florida's Atlantic coast, with a gale warning in effect as of Oct. 26 for portions of Atlantic waters near South Florida, per TravelHost's reporting.
Forecasters warn of strong wind gusts, dangerous surf and an elevated rip-current risk through midweek. These conditions can complicate cruise arrivals and departures, and port access may be restricted until marine conditions allow safe operations.
TravelHost also reports rough seas began rolling into the region the evening of Oct. 25.
The Stakes and the Compensation
TravelHost reports that passengers whose packages were priced per day, such as beverage or WiFi packages, will receive prorated refunds as onboard account credits, with unused balances refunded after the voyage, and each stateroom will get a $50 Future Cruise Credit.
Travelers who prefer to reschedule can rebook without fees. "The safety of our guests and crew is always our highest priority," the cruise line said in the advisory.
TravelHost adds that the episode underscores the value of travel insurance with trip delay coverage.
What Comes Next for Bahama-Bound Cruisers
TravelHost advises anyone booked on upcoming cruises departing South Florida in the days ahead to monitor email for potential embarkation and itinerary updates, since even short Bahamas runs can be upended by severe weather.
Northeast Ohio cruisers told WJW, via AOL, that reroutes happen more often than travelers think — one family said their line notified them only the night before sailing that a nor'easter with 50-foot seas had redirected them to Canada, and advises packing layers and considering travel insurance since you cannot count on onboard offers.
