Kyler Murray hurt his hamstring late in Minnesota's 19-15 loss at Detroit, where Andrew Van Ginkel sacked Jared Goff three times.
Vikings' perfect start ends at Ford Field
Minnesota's first defeat of the 2026 season arrived in Detroit on Sunday, Nov. 1, as the Lions edged the Vikings 19-15 at Ford Field in Week 8.
The loss snapped what had been an unbeaten run — vikings.com's video library shows Kevin O'Connell speaking after the game about the team's previous status at 6-0, built on wins including Week 7's victory over the Colts sealed by Harrison Smith's 40th career interception.
This time the story flipped: the offense stalled, and Minnesota walked out of Detroit having squandered a defensive performance that included James Pierre intercepting Jared Goff and a first-half pass rush that repeatedly dropped the Lions quarterback.
Kyler Murray still delivered highlights — an 8-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Hockenson, a 51-yard strike to Jordan Addison, and a two-point conversion pass to Addison — but it was not enough to hold off Detroit.
Murray's hamstring adds an injury worry
NBC Sports reports that Murray developed hamstring tightness sometime late in the fourth quarter, though he told reporters it came late enough that it did not affect him during the 19-15 loss.
Murray returned to the field for the next drive, and coach Kevin O'Connell told reporters, 'Kyler Murray just [had] some hamstring tightness, and he was able to return late in the football game.'
The quarterback will undergo further evaluation on Monday, saying, 'We'll look at it, obviously, and do what we need to do.'
Van Ginkel's hat trick of sacks
The most eye-catching individual performance of the afternoon belonged to edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel, whom vikings.com's game footage shows sacking Jared Goff three times in the first half alone — a 'hat trick' that repeatedly forced Detroit into long down-and-distance situations.
Eric Wilson added another first-half sack of Goff, and James Pierre added an interception of the Lions quarterback, giving Minnesota's defense a genuinely disruptive day even in defeat.
That contrast — a defense producing three sacks from one player and a turnover, while the offense managed only 15 points — is exactly why Murray pointed to execution afterward, telling reporters, 'We didn't execute at a high enough level.'

The immediate reaction to the defeat came straight from Murray himself in the Vikings' postgame media availability, posted by the team as 'Kyler Murray on Loss in Detroit: "We Didn't Execute at a High Enough Level."'
In it, the quarterback addresses the media following the Vikings-Lions Week 8 game at Ford Field, framing the loss around Minnesota's own shortcomings rather than Detroit's brilliance.
Alongside it, vikings.com also posted Kevin O'Connell's postgame press conference covering the loss, injury updates and Murray, plus locker room interviews with T.J.
Hockenson — who spoke about Jack Campbell's injury and his belief in the locker room — and Jordan Addison on the offense's potential and improving execution. Together they capture a team processing its first stumble after a 6-0 start.
