Lions All-Pro LB Jack Campbell was carted off with a neck injury and will remain in a hospital overnight for evaluation.
A frightening moment at Ford Field
Campbell was face down on the turf and was not moving after hitting Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson for his third tackle of the game.
Medical personnel evaluated him before he was strapped to a board and carefully lifted onto a cart to a round of applause. Detroit's entire team and most of the coaching staff surrounded the cart before it carried him off for further evaluation.
The team's official update
The Lions announced that Campbell will remain in a local hospital overnight for "continued evaluation and monitoring" and that the team will provide further updates as it has them. Per ESPN, the team said he is resting.
Coach Dan Campbell said after the game that he did not have additional information, adding, "We're thinking about him."
One of three key defenders hurt
Campbell was one of three key Lions defenders injured in the game, along with pass rusher DJ Wonnum and safety Brian Branch, who suffered concussions earlier in the contest, according to ESPN. Yahoo Sports reports teammates surrounded him with tears in their eyes as the cart left the field.
Why the loss would sting
The former Iowa star was drafted No. 18 overall in 2023 and earned All-Pro honors last season after becoming the first NFL player in seven years to record 150-plus tackles along with at least five sacks and three forced fumbles.
Yahoo Sports reports he has started 53 of 58 career games with 459 combined tackles and 8.5 sacks. The Lions signed him last May to an extension through 2030.
What comes next
The organization has said only that Campbell is resting and that further updates will come as more information is available.
Until doctors complete their evaluation, the Lions' defense — and a locker room visibly shaken by the scene — is left waiting on word about one of the anchors of its front seven.
