'Paddington the Musical' has extended its Savoy Theatre run to June 25, 2028, after a record-tying seven Olivier Awards, Variety and Deadline report.
The Bear Isn't Going Anywhere
Producers confirmed this week that Paddington the Musical will stay at London's Savoy Theatre through at least June 25, 2028, with the extension announced just as the show approaches its first anniversary in the West End.
Variety reports that tickets for the extended run are already on sale, with the best availability beginning in summer 2027.
The Hollywood Reporter attributes the decision to "unprecedented demand," and Deadline says producers cited exactly that: an unbroken wave of ticket demand for the stage adaptation of Michael Bond's beloved bear. The announcement lands alongside a new cast, which began performances October 28.
Why the Extension Is Historic
The show's longevity isn't just commercial — it's now awards-history territory.
Paddington tied the record for the most Olivier wins by a musical, taking seven trophies at the 2026 ceremony, including best new musical, best director for Luke Sheppard, and best actor in a musical for James Hameed and Arti Shah, who jointly portrayed the title bear.
Variety reports the production also tied the record for the most wins in WhatsOnStage Awards history with nine trophies, and took the Critics' Circle Award for best new musical. For a children's-book adaptation, the sweep is the kind of result theatergoers rarely see twice.
The Two-Person Bear
Much of the buzz surrounds how Paddington is staged.
According to Variety, the bear is brought to life through a full-body costume and remote puppetry: original performer Arti Shah physically embodied Paddington onstage while James Hameed provided his voice and remotely controlled the bear's facial expressions.
The pair spent three years developing the character in workshops before the show opened.
With the new cast installed as of October 28, Abbie Purvis and Hassan Taj now alternate as Paddington's onstage performers, with Sonny Monaghan supplying the voice and remote puppetry, per Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.
The Creative Team Behind It
The musical, based on Bond's 1958 book *A Bear Called Paddington* and StudioCanal's 2014 film, features music and lyrics by McFly singer Tom Fletcher, a book by Jessica Swale, and direction by Luke Sheppard, whose credits include *& Juliet*.
It is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, StudioCanal and Eliza Lumley Productions on behalf of Universal Music UK.
The new cast includes Haydn Oakley and Charlotte Wakefield as Mr. and Mrs. Brown, Cassidy Janson as Millicent Clyde, and Linzi Hateley as Mrs. Bird, with Tarinn Callender and Teddy Kempner reprising roles as Grant and Mr. Gruber, The Hollywood Reporter notes.
What Comes Next: Broadway and Sydney
The London extension isn't the end of the story. According to Variety, the London extension is expected to run alongside, not interfere with, those international plans.
For fans of the marmalade-loving bear, the message is clear: London keeps him through mid-2028, and the Americas and Australia get their turn within the next year.
