A Bahamas-bound Learjet 60 crashed near West Palm Beach on Sunday, killing all nine aboard, after the crew reported ice and a runaway descent.
A Sunday Crash on Military Trail
A Learjet 60 business jet crashed around 12:50 p.m. ET on Sunday, Nov.
1, near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North in Palm Beach County, Florida, in an unincorporated area between Greenacres and Palm Springs. All nine people aboard were killed, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said, calling the crash a "horrific tragedy."
The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.
Images from the scene showed a large crater in the middle of the six-lane road, with fire and debris scattered across it, but officials reported nobody on the ground was hurt.
Why the Descent Was So Alarming
What makes this crash stand out is how fast it unfolded and how clearly the crew's distress was recorded. In air traffic control audio, a cockpit voice reported "moderate turbulence" and that the crew was "managing the ice," then said the plane was "picking up precipitation" and "we need to climb."
Within moments the same voice reported a descent of 10,000 feet per minute, then yelled that the jet was "in an overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute" before saying "we are going to crash into the ground."
About 35 seconds after the initial mayday call, the last transmission was "we're out of time." Flight-tracking website Flightradar24 said data showed the vertical descent rate at one point exceeded 32,000 feet per minute.
The Dashcam Footage That Spread Nationwide
The moment of impact was captured on video, and it is the detail readers cannot stop discussing.
Unverified footage posted on social media appears to show a dash-camera recording of a residential suburban street when an aircraft suddenly nosedives into the ground almost vertically and explodes into a large fireball.
CNN published the video of the Bahamas-bound Learjet erupting in a fireball in Palm Beach County on Sunday afternoon.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis told reporters, "It's like a missile coming down, and a massive explosion, debris going everywhere," and described the accident as a "cataclysmic plane crash" that left a big crater on the side of the road.
Evacuations, Closure and the NTSB Investigation
The consequences for the neighborhood are substantial.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue declared a mass casualty incident, and about 600 residents of a nearby mobile home community were being evacuated because the neighborhood's entrance had become part of the investigation scene, with displaced residents moved to two county shelters and the Red Cross on standby, according to Palm Beach County Commissioner Joel Flores.
The crash also damaged local water lines, and Flores said the massive crater on Military Trail means he does not see the road open in the next 30 days. Thunderstorms were reported in the area at the time, with rain and lightning, east winds around 15 mph gusting to 25 mph.
The NTSB will lead the investigation with FAA support, and Bombardier said it would fully support the effort.
