Costco expanded Uber Eats delivery to 47 states as DoorDash added all U.S. warehouses, pitting two couriers against each other for bulk groceries.

Two couriers, one membership warehouse

Uber and Costco expanded their U.S. Uber Eats partnership from 17 states to 47, making nearly 600 Costco locations available for delivery, according to a Wednesday press release reported by CNBC. Uber President and COO Andrew Macdonald said the nationwide partnership gives Costco members 'more ways to shop' and demonstrates the scale Uber can offer retailers meeting everyday shopping needs. Separately, Cedar News reports Costco launched nationwide same-day delivery through DoorDash, covering all U.S. warehouses with more than 4,000 products, including Kirkland Signature items.

Why the simultaneous expansion matters

The dual expansion is notable because Costco historically kept delivery partners limited and regional, and because both deals landed within the same week. Uber Eats shoppers must verify their Costco membership before purchasing, and CNBC reports some members will receive an Uber One discount while customers can buy Costco memberships inside the Uber Eats app. On the DoorDash side, Cedar News says customers link an active membership before checkout, and DoorDash told Cedar News that Costco had been one of the most-searched retailers not previously on its platform, signaling pent-up demand. Costco's own international DoorDash footprint, already live in Australia, New Zealand, Sweden and Iceland, clearly paved the way for the U.S. rollout.

A grocery delivery fight with bigger rivals

The move lands in an increasingly crowded grocery delivery market. CNBC notes Uber Eats faces longtime competitors Instacart, DoorDash and Amazon Fresh, plus Walmart, which recently launched 'Walmart Restaurant Delivery' with Subway and Dunkin', going beyond its own store inventory. For Uber, the Costco deal could broaden Uber Eats' customer base and introduce Costco's bulk-minded membership model to younger consumers, CNBC reports.

What comes next for members and margins

Both platforms are now effectively bidding for the same Costco basket: CNBC says all Costco items are available on Uber Eats, an Uber spokesperson confirmed, while Cedar News describes grocery, household, electronics and seasonal merchandise on DoorDash with eligible orders available for same-day delivery nationwide. Costco did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment, so the company's own view of the two-track strategy remains unstated. Watch for whether membership-verification friction, delivery fees and bulk-size logistics hold up at scale, and whether Instacart — historically Costco's delivery partner market — responds. With Walmart pushing further into delivery and DoorDash trending as a top search this week, the grocery courier land grab is accelerating.
