Wu-Tang Clan will headline the Detroit Lions' 87th Thanksgiving Classic halftime show Nov. 26, a pick by Eminem and Paul Rosenberg.
Wu-Tang Brings Da Ruckus to Ford Field
The Detroit Lions announced Sunday that Wu-Tang Clan will headline the Thanksgiving Halftime Show powered by Verizon during the 87th annual Thanksgiving Day Classic on Thursday, Nov. 26, when the Lions host the Chicago Bears at Ford Field.
The NFC North matchup kicks off at 1 p.m. ET and will be televised nationally on CBS.
Lions president and CEO Rich Haddad called the Thanksgiving Day Classic one of the greatest traditions in sports and Wu-Tang one of the greatest performers in music, saying the team is thrilled to have the group headlining.
According to the Detroit Lions, film, television and Broadway actor Antonio Cipriano will perform the national anthem.
Why a Wu-Tang Halftime Is a Surprising Pick
What makes the announcement a genuine shocker for hip-hop fans is the picker: the New York Post reports that Eminem and his longtime manager Paul Rosenberg selected Wu-Tang Clan as part of their multiyear partnership with the Lions to executive produce the team's Thanksgiving halftime performances.
Rosenberg, president of Shady Records, said the partnership often looks to do things that are both exciting and unexpected, calling a Wu-Tang Clan Thanksgiving performance in Detroit a perfect fit.
Both Eminem and Rosenberg say they have been Wu fans since the early 1990s, alongside a whole generation of Detroit football fans.
Last year's halftime entertainment was Eminem himself alongside Jack White, so handing the stage to a Staten Island-formed rap collective marks a notable shift in the program's direction.
A Farewell Tour Capstone Weeks After Hall of Fame Induction
According to the New York Post, the performance comes during the year the group was selected for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's 2026 class, with the induction ceremony scheduled for Nov. 14 in Los Angeles — just twelve days before the Detroit date.
Yahoo Sports notes the group is finishing its global farewell tour, Wu-Tang Forever: The Final Chamber, which wrapped in October, and frames the halftime slot as one of the bigger names the Lions have ever landed.
For a fanbase that just watched the Final Chamber run close out, a nationally televised Thanksgiving stage is an unexpected encore.
The Catalog Behind the Booking
The legacy being carried to Ford Field is one of the deepest in the genre. Wu-Tang Clan, founded on Staten Island in the early 1990s, transformed hip-hop with its 1993 debut Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), which introduced classics including C.R.E.A.M., Protect Ya Neck and Method Man.
The 1997 sophomore release Wu-Tang Forever debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. The current lineup is RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Cappadonna and the late Ol' Dirty Bastard.
What Comes Next Between Now and Nov. 26
Before the Clan touches the Detroit turf, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony lands first, scheduled for Nov. 14 in Los Angeles, followed by the group's already-completed farewell tour run.
The halftime performance also extends a busy New York-and-beyond stretch the New York Post describes: members were celebrated at Fat Joe's hip-hop float during the Knicks' ticker-tape championship parade in June, the group performed at halftime of the Knicks' historic Game 4 comeback in the NBA Finals, and Method Man performed during the Knicks' banner night home opener in October.
With Eminem and Rosenberg committed as executive producers on a multiyear deal, the Thanksgiving slot looks set to keep booking names of Wu-Tang's caliber, and the Nov. 26 broadcast on CBS will show whether a 1 p.m.
ET holiday crowd gets the full ruckus.
