Blex Media reports Paramount+ is canceling Criminal Minds: Evolution even though the show ranked No. 11 among 2026's most-streamed titles.

A Top-10 Show Gets Cut Anyway

The surprising core of this story, per Blex Media, is that Paramount+ is ending Criminal Minds: Evolution despite strong performance: the series remains in the service's Top 10 and reportedly ranked No. 11 among 2026's most-streamed titles overall, with 13.15 billion minutes watched.

Blex Media attributes the decision partly to cost considerations, describing Evolution as a broadcast-style procedural running on a streaming budget — a model Paramount+ had used for continuations like SEAL Team, Frasier and NCIS: Tony & Ziva, all of which have also wrapped.

That framing turns the cancellation from a ratings story into an economics story, which is exactly what devoted streaming watchers will be debating.

The First Cut Under New Paramount+ Leadership

According to Blex Media, the cancellation is the first official one under new Paramount+ leadership — Skydance Direct to Consumer Co-Chair and Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys — though sources told the outlet that the call followed a recommendation from the previous regime, which had given the show an early Season 20 renewal back in March, ahead of Season 19's debut.

That hand-off detail matters for streaming-industry readers: it suggests the outgoing team's renewal commitments are being weighed by an incoming one.

The Economic Times similarly reports the decision was made recently by the new executives at Paramount+ after recommendations from the previous executives, even while the show was still popular on the service.

A Finale Nobody Filmed as a Finale

Both Blex Media and The Economic Times flag the structural wrinkle fans keep circling: Season 20 wrapped production this fall and will premiere in 2027, but it was shot without anyone knowing it would serve as the series finale, meaning the show will not get a deliberately planned ending.

The Economic Times notes there is no set date for the final season yet.

Showrunner and executive producer Erica Messer called the decision sudden, saying that while suddenly navigating the end of the chapter she is filled with gratitude for the cast, writers, directors and crew, and that she looks forward to celebrating the legacy of the show — per Blex Media's report.

The open question both outlets pose is whether Paramount+ or another platform eventually gives the franchise the planned sendoff Messer and the cast still hope to deliver.

The Cast Mourns in Real Time, From Tombstones to 'Free Agent'

Variety and The Hollywood Reporter both catalog the cast's social-media farewells. A.J.

Cook, who has played Jennifer 'JJ' Jareau since 2005, marked the news on Halloween with a tombstone photo captioned 'Rest in peace JJ (for now).' Paget Brewster posted a black-and-white photo reading 'Free Agent,' while RJ Hatanaka shared a cast photo calling them 'just the finest group of people.'

Aisha Tyler reshared it with 'Family for life,' and Cook added that the cast 'own my heart forever and always.'

The Hollywood Reporter notes Vangsness revealed in her video's comments that the cast learned of the cancellation at the same time as fans — a detail underscoring how abruptly the decision landed.

Vangsness: 'There's So Many More Stories to Tell'

In an Instagram video — Variety and The Hollywood Reporter both describe it — Kirsten Vangsness likened the moment to Charlie getting the chocolate in 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory': bittersweet, and rare at twenty seasons.

'It's being cancelled, but then it says right there it's ending for now,' she said, and added, 'I love my job, and my boss Erica Messer says there are so many more stories to tell. So if we get to keep telling them somewhere, that would be amazing.

I know all of us feel the same way.' Variety also notes she captioned the post with 'heart fireworks in appreciation' for her 'co-horts at fake murder camp.'

For fans, that 'for now' is the thread left dangling.

Twenty Seasons, Fifth-Longest Drama Ever

For scale, Blex Media and The Economic Times both note the franchise now spans 20 seasons — 15 on CBS ending in 2020, five on Paramount+ since the 2022 Evolution revival — tying it for fifth among the longest-running drama series in television history, behind Law & Order: SVU, the original Law & Order, NCIS and Grey's Anatomy, all still on the air.

The franchise also spawned two short-lived spinoffs, Suspect Behavior in 2011 and Beyond Borders from 2016 to 2017, per Blex Media. The Evolution cast includes Joe Mantegna, A.J.

Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, RJ Hatanaka, Adam Rodriguez and Paget Brewster, and the series is produced by 20th Television and CBS Studios. Season 20 arrives in 2027.
