Chanel's Dia Art Foundation gala honored Roni Horn and Steve McQueen and feted departing director Jessica Morgan, bound for Tate.
What Happened at Dia's Fall Night
On Monday evening, the Dia Art Foundation held its annual Fall Night gala in New York, honoring artist Roni Horn and British film director Steve McQueen.
According to Cultured, the evening was co-chaired by Chanel creative director Matthieu Blazy alongside artists Carrie Mae Weems and Rosemarie Trockel, and it was the first fall gala sponsored by Chanel after the partnership became official in May, per Harper's BAZAAR.
More than 400 guests began with an after-hours viewing of David Lamelas's 'The Machine' exhibition at Dia Chelsea, then moved a few blocks for cocktails, a candlelit dinner, and tributes.
Attendees included Sofia Coppola, Marion Cotillard, Marina Abramović, Matthew Barney, Michael Stipe, Candace Bushnell, Julio Torres, Glenn Ligon, and Thelma Golden.
Why the Night Carried Extra Weight
The gala doubled as a farewell for Dia director Jessica Morgan, who has led the foundation since 2015 and takes over as director of the Tate in London on January 1, according to Cultured.
WWD reports that Morgan used her remarks to list her tenure's highlights: more than 100 exhibitions, a collection that has tripled, and an endowment nearing $200 million.
'It's been an absolute joy to work here,' she told the room, adding a warning to her successor: 'I'm going to be looking very carefully to see what's going on, so don't mess it up.' That mix of celebration and transition made the night more than a routine fundraiser.
The Tributes and the Evidence
Per Cultured, Matthew Barney paid tribute to Horn, recalling her photographic diptych 'Clowd & Clown' and joking that he never asked whether she posed in costume 'because I know that Roni isn't a clown, but there's a brilliant comedian in there.'
WWD describes Grammy-winning musician and poet Meshell Ndegeocello serenading McQueen as she wove through the gallery tables with guitars, singing lyrics urging guests to 'be very wary of those with limited ideas and concepts about space and time.'
Harper's BAZAAR notes remarks also came from board chair Nathalie de Gunzburg and Dia director Jessica Morgan.
Chanel's Stakes in the Art World
Chanel's involvement signals a deepening fashion-house commitment to the arts. WWD reports the fall gala was the second Dia event supported by the maison, following the Dia Beacon spring benefit, and notes Blazy's ties to the foundation stretch back to his Bottega Veneta days.
Harper's BAZAAR adds that Chanel will also sponsor Dia Beacon's annual Spring Benefit luncheon in 2027.
Proceeds from the evening will fund artist commissions, publications, lectures, educational programs, free admission to Dia's New York locations, and restoration of gallery spaces, per the outlets. Cultured notes guests left with a Dia exhibition book and Chanel fragrance as parting gifts.
What Comes Next for Dia
Dia now faces two transitions at once: a handover of leadership to a yet-unnamed director after Morgan departs for the Tate, and a deepening Chanel partnership that Cultured and WWD suggest will extend through future benefits.
Cultured reports Morgan said her successor will inherit sturdier buildings and stronger finances than she did, while WWD quotes de Gunzburg telling Blazy, 'I hope we'll be together for many years.'
