GrapheneOS Picks Motorola Signature 27, First Non-Pixel Phone

The Graphene Foundation confirmed the Motorola Signature 27 will be the first non-Pixel phone ever supported by the privacy-focused GrapheneOS.

For its entire existence, GrapheneOS — a hardened version of Android built around privacy and security — has been available exclusively on Google Pixel smartphones, largely because of strict hardware and software requirements. That changed this week when the Graphene Foundation confirmed that the Motorola Signature 27, Motorola's newly announced flagship running the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, will become its first officially supported non-Pixel device. The confirmation came on X, when a user asked whether the Signature 27 would support GrapheneOS and the foundation replied: "Yes, that will be the initial supported phone. Wait for official news about it."

The Signature 27 is no niche privacy handset — it is Motorola's full-throttle flagship, which gives the GrapheneOS news extra weight. According to Sportskeeda Tech, the phone packs a 6.8-inch 1.5K LTPO AMOLED display with a 165 Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision and 3,000-nit peak brightness, plus 12/16 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of UFS 4.1 storage on Android 17. The camera array is unusually deep: a 50 MP main sensor with OIS, a 200 MP periscope telephoto with 5x optical zoom, a 50 MP ultrawide, and a 50 MP selfie camera, backed by a 7,000 mAh battery with 90W wired and 50W wireless charging. Sportskeeda also notes a distinctive triple-camera setup with an added action sensor for motion capture in video.

GrapheneOS historically selects devices on far more than raw chipset performance — Yahoo Tech reports the project demands secure boot, rollback protection, hardware security, regular vendor support, memory safety, secure storage and full encryption. Motorola's update commitments appear to have cleared that bar: Yahoo Tech reports the company has promised seven Android OS upgrades and up to seven years of security updates for the Signature 27, matching the longevity GrapheneOS requires. Yahoo Tech adds that Motorola had announced a partnership with GrapheneOS earlier this year to bring the platform to its smartphones, though which model would get it first was unclear until the foundation's X reply this Wednesday. Funnily enough, as Yahoo Tech observes, Pixels would have been last on the list if speed alone mattered.

Key details remain open. According to Sportskeeda Tech, it is unknown whether Motorola will ship the Signature 27 with GrapheneOS out of the box or offer it as a separate option for privacy-conscious buyers, and the GrapheneOS team has itself asked users to wait for an official announcement from Motorola. Neither the Graphene Foundation nor Motorola has shared pricing, though Yahoo Tech reports the phone is expected to hit shelves by the end of the year. If the rollout lands as signaled, the first phone to escape Pixel-only GrapheneOS will be a Moto flagship — a genuine reversal for a project long treated as an extension of Google's own hardware line, and a meaningful new choice for privacy-focused Android buyers.
