Jonathan Groff returns to Broadway in Jessica Dickey's solo play 'The Amish Project,' beginning Feb. 10, 2027 at the Broadhurst Theatre.

Groff Returns to Broadway in a One-Person Play

Jonathan Groff is heading back to Broadway this season in *The Amish Project*, a solo play written by Jessica Dickey and directed by Sarna Lapine. According to The Hollywood Reporter, performances are slated to begin Feb.

10, 2027, at the Broadhurst Theatre, with *Just In Time* producers Robert Ahrens and Tom Kirdahy producing. The News International reports the producers confirmed the start date on Friday, October 23.

In a striking twist for the material, the play is typically staged as a one-woman show with the main actor playing multiple characters — The Hollywood Reporter notes Groff will perform the play as written.

Groff called Dickey's writing "astounding" and said he was "floored by the urgency and potent poetry" of a script that explores the idea that "sometimes the most radical human act is forgiveness."

Why This Role Hits Close to Home for Groff

The subject matter struck a personal chord with the star.

Groff said in a statement, quoted by both The Hollywood Reporter and The News International, that twenty years ago this month "an unimaginable tragedy happened in a one room Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster, Pennsylvania," and that Dickey wrote "an astounding work of art in response."

The News International ties the play to the 2006 Nickel Mines school shooting, in which a 32-year-old truck driver shot five girls in a one-room Amish schoolhouse before taking his own life as police arrived — and notes the Amish community famously responded with support for the gunman's family and widow.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Groff grew up nearby in Amish country, and Sarna Lapine sent him the script last year.

A 2009 Off-Broadway Play Gets a Broadway Second Act

The surprising move here is a years-old intimate play leaping to a Broadway house with an A-list solo performer.

The Hollywood Reporter reports the play debuted at the New York International Fringe Festival, was developed at the Cherry Lane Theatre, and premiered Off-Broadway at the Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in 2009; it has since been produced at regional theaters across the U.S. and around the world.

Groff arrives straight from his Royal Shakespeare Company debut in *As You Like It* this past fall, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Groff's Broadway Hot Streak and What Comes Next

This marks Groff's third Broadway project in recent years, according to The Hollywood Reporter: his Tony-winning role in *Merrily We Roll Along* in the 2023–2024 season, his Tony-nominated run in *Just In Time* from March 2025 into 2026, and now *The Amish Project* — with the same producers carrying over from the latter.

The Hollywood Reporter also notes he recently completed production on Lin-Manuel Miranda's feature adaptation of *Octet* and the independent film *Trust the Man*, starring opposite Daniel Radcliffe.

The News International's report emphasizes that a play born from a heart-wrenching tragedy — and the community's remarkable forgiveness — is now finding its biggest stage yet. Performances begin Feb.

10, 2027, at the Broadhurst Theatre.
