UK Rap Pioneer Sway DaSafo Dies at 44

British rapper Sway DaSafo, the first unsigned act to win a MOBO for hip-hop, has died at 44 as KSI and UK scene figures pay tribute.

The MOBO Awards announced the death of Sway DaSafo on Instagram, sharing a video of the north London rapper accepting Best Hip-Hop Act in 2005. The organisation wrote that Sway will always hold a special place in MOBO history and sent condolences to his family and everyone inspired by his music. His cause of death has not been confirmed, and The Guardian reports he was in Ghana when he died. The Evening Standard notes he had previously revealed a 2010 Hodgkin Lymphoma diagnosis and entered remission after successful treatment. He is survived by four children — Jalil, AJ, Inaya and Imara.

Sway made history in 2005 as the first unsigned act to win Best Hip-Hop Act at the MOBO Awards, beating global heavyweights including 50 Cent and The Game before releasing any debut album. The MOBO organisation said that at a time when British rappers were still fighting to be recognised alongside their US counterparts, his win made a real statement about the talent, creativity and potential coming out of the UK. He followed it with the critically acclaimed album This Is My Demo, which earned a Mercury Prize nomination, and the 2006 single Little Derek, which reached Number 30 on the UK Singles Chart.

KSI posted an emotional tribute on Instagram, thanking Sway for believing in him when many did not and for giving him a chance when others laughed him off as a joke. He called Sway like a father figure, saying he would go to his London studio for advice whenever he had problems, and that 44 is too young to leave. The Evening Standard reports Sway was instrumental in developing KSI's career. BBC star Kash Ahmad called him a true legend and pioneer in the UK rap game, while Kadeem Ramsay, Adam Deacon, Lemar and Clara Amfo also shared condolences.

Sway said he never felt at home in any single genre — he passed on UK garage because the scene's vibe did not suit him, found British hip-hop too dry and grey, could not rap in Twi for hiplife, and ruled out drum'n'bass and R&B. Across his career he released five studio albums and two EPs, beginning with the groups Phynix Crew and One before going solo. He also acted, appearing in Top Boy in 2011 and the 2012 film The Grind, according to Leadership Newspapers.

With no confirmed cause of death, further details are expected from family representatives, and tributes from across the UK scene continue to accumulate. Sway's passing lands as a generational marker for UK hip-hop: a rapper who won a MOBO as an independent with no album to his name helped pave the way for the British artists now topping global charts. As the MOBO statement put it, he left his mark as an artist and champion of British music, and the history he shared with the organisation will endure.
