Instagram has launched a dedicated Apple TV app, bringing Reels, longer videos, and live shows to the big screen for the first time.

What happened: Instagram reaches Apple's streaming box

Instagram is now available on the Apple TV, bringing Reels, longer videos, and live shows to Apple's streaming device for the first time. The app appears to have gone live on October 23, and it is a free download from the Apple TV App Store on any Apple TV running tvOS 26.0 or later.

Why it's surprising: Apple was the last stop

The twist is that Apple, of all companies, was the final holdout for Instagram's TV ambitions. Meta first tested its TV app on Amazon Fire TV devices in the United States in December 2025, expanded to Google TV in February 2026, and reached Samsung smart TVs in June.

According to iThinkDifferent, Meta said in June that those three platforms already cover the majority of connected TV devices in the US, which made Apple TV the obvious next stop.

MacRumors also spotted an archived App Store listing from October 19 that still showed only iPhone and iPad compatibility, meaning support appeared just days before launch.

The evidence: App Store metadata and listings

The launch is corroborated by App Store records. MacRumors reports that Apple's TV-specific release metadata dates version 66.0 of the app to October 23, while an archived listing from October 19 still listed only iPhone and iPad support.

Multiple outlets, including The News International, confirm the app's description lists longer videos and live shows alongside Reels.

According to iThinkDifferent, the app is rated 13+ and includes age assurance and parental controls, and one App Store page now covers the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV versions together.

Watching video: Reels, longer clips, and cross-device resume

The Apple TV app carries three kinds of content: portrait-style Reels, longer creator videos, and live shows. Videos you start on an iPhone or iPad can be picked up again on the TV, so you don't have to hunt for the same Reel twice.

The earlier TV versions on Fire TV focused on Reels organized into interest-based channels with automatic playback, and according to The News International, that Fire TV launch supported up to five accounts per TV with Reels generally following PG-13 standards.

Episodic series, however, are not part of the Apple TV app at launch, per iThinkDifferent.

The stakes: taking on YouTube in the living room

Meta is betting that its famously addictive short-form video will translate to the big screen, where it can be enjoyed more communally.

Mashable reports that Instagram is exploring longer-form video, episodic content, live streaming, and even subscriptions, which would put it in closer competition with YouTube, the internet's premier video service.

Mashable also notes Instagram had to support horizontal, landscape videos to accommodate TV aspect ratios, not just the portrait clips familiar from phones. If Meta can grab even a fraction of YouTube's audience, it will more than pay off.

What comes next: new hardware and more features

The timing is notable because a new Apple TV 4K with an A19 chip goes on sale November 13 for $299, according to iThinkDifferent, giving the app fresh hardware to run on.

Meta has also been testing casting Reels from a phone to the TV, Stories on the big screen, and a dedicated home for horizontal videos; casting is live on Google TV and Fire TV, but there is no word yet on which of these features will reach Apple TV.

In the meantime, with ads, messaging, and user-generated content in the mix, iThinkDifferent suggests setting up the parental controls before the first household Reels session.
