Keanu Reeves will star in Netflix's hurricane thriller 'Maelstrom' for director Jaume Collet-Serra, replacing Alan Ritchson.
Reeves Steps In as Ritchson Exits
Netflix's action thriller Maelstrom has a new leading man. Deadline reports that Keanu Reeves is set to star in the film from *Carry-On* director Jaume Collet-Serra, with sources confirming the casting to the outlet.
He takes over the lead from *Reacher* star Alan Ritchson, who exited the project for reasons that have not been disclosed; Deadline notes reps for Netflix declined to comment.
GamesRadar+ adds that no further cast announcements have been made and that the reason behind Ritchson's departure remains unknown.
'Die Hard in a Hurricane' — the Premise
The logline, as described across the pack's outlets, is pure high-concept survival. Maelstrom follows a Federal Marshal assigned to protect the fiancée of an arms dealer turned witness, who plans to testify against him in exchange for witness protection.
Over one brutal night, a hurricane makes landfall: communication is cut off, reinforcements are stranded, and the dealer's men descend on the safe house. M.A.A.C. describes it as "Die Hard during a hurricane," and Digital Spy reports that Variety used the same phrase back in 1993.
Female First adds that the film unfolds over a single, intense night, with the marshal and his witness forced to survive both the catastrophic storm and a relentless onslaught of armed henchmen. It is exactly the contained, high-concept thriller format that has served Netflix well before.
A 33-Year-Old Script Finally Gets Made
The surprising twist is the project's age. Multiple outlets report the screenplay was first sold as a spec to Warner Bros. in 1993, written by the late Gregory Fitzpatrick, with producer Jeff Robinov — then an agent — involved in the original sale.
Mark Bianculli (*How to Rob a Bank*) is now polishing the script. Robinov, the former Warner Bros.
Why 'Carry-On' Made This Happen
Netflix's appetite for resurrected scripts traces directly to one surprise hit.
Page Six reports that *Carry-On* — dormant for 11 years before Netflix revived it with Collet-Serra and stars Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman — became the third most-viewed film ever at the streamer, and that Netflix executive Ori Marmur then alerted top producers around Hollywood to bring their best unmade, high-concept projects to the service, which is how Maelstrom surfaced.
GamesRadar+ corroborates the numbers, citing Tudum's 172.1 million views for *Carry-On*, and notes Marmur's solicitation. The A.V.
Club frames the Collet-Serra pairing as a repeat play: the director previously picked up another relic script and turned it into a hit.
For a streaming-obsessed audience, the pattern is the story — Netflix is systematically mining Hollywood's unmade spec-script vaults for its next contained thriller.
Reeves' Packed Slate Beyond Maelstrom
Maelstrom lands amid an unusually busy stretch for Reeves.
Deadline reports he is in talks to lead James Wan's Paramount remake of the Korean crime actioner *The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil*, will reprise his voice role as Shadow in *Sonic the Hedgehog 4*, and has set up an adaptation of Oliver Lowe's forthcoming novel *Kill Current: A Jon Hendricks Thriller* — the first project from his new banner Two Dragonflies.
Deadline also lists the Warner Bros. sci-fi flick *Shiver* and Ruben Östlund's *The Entertainment System Is Down* among his upcoming projects, and Female First notes he was most recently seen in Jonah Hill's *Outcome* on Apple TV+.
Digital Spy adds that Reeves will voice John Wick in an untitled *John Wick* video game for PlayStation 5 while helping produce it with Chad Stahelski.
What Comes Next
Plenty remains unsettled. Multiple outlets note Maelstrom has no release date yet, and neither Netflix nor Reeves' representatives have commented officially — Deadline says reps for Netflix declined to comment, while Page Six reports reps for Ritchson did not respond.
Netflix has not confirmed any additional cast members, and filming schedules and production details remain under wraps, per Cinema Express and GamesRadar+.
Page Six also points out the news lands just as Peter Rice starts Monday as Netflix's incoming chief content officer, and notes Robinov's name has come up as a possible replacement for outgoing Warner Bros. executives Michael De Luca and Pam Adby.
Whether the Reeves-Collet-Serra pairing can replicate *Carry-On*'s 172.1-million-view breakout is the question streaming watchers will be asking until a date is set.
