Disney renewed 'Coven Academy' for Season 2 after the supernatural teen drama drew 20.3 million global streaming hours in three weeks.

Disney conjures a fast Season 2 renewal

Disney has renewed Coven Academy, its supernatural teen drama from creator Tim Federle, for a second season at Disney+ and Hulu, according to Deadline.

The Monday announcement came just over three weeks after the Season 1 premiere on October 1, which aired nine chapters on Freeform before the full 21-episode season landed on streaming the next day.

The numbers behind the decision

The renewal was driven by viewership that stands out for a young-skewing streaming title.

Per Disney, the first season racked up 20.3 million global hours on Disney+ and Hulu in its first three weeks, with an additional 30 million-plus views after the first chapter was made available on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

Deadline reports the series was the No. 1 streaming series among teens 12–17 over premiere weekend and a Top 5 title among all viewers P2+ based on views. Comic Basics adds that TheWrap pegged its first week at 11 million hours viewed.

A short-form strategy that paid off

What makes the hit surprising is how untraditional its packaging is. Comic Basics reports the season consisted of 21 short chapters rather than hour-long installments, all dropped on streaming at once for easy bingeing, while Freeform aired weekly blocks through October as Halloween programming.

Nielsen data cited by Deadline showed co-viewing was key: half of teens 12–17 and nearly two-thirds of children 6–11 watched alongside an adult.

Outlets suggest the social-first release of the first chapter created a pipeline from viral clips to full-season streaming — a model Comic Basics argues could become a template for Disney's teen properties.

From viral clip to full-season streaming

The video itself became the story: Disney released the first chapter of Coven Academy free on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, where it drew more than 30 million views worldwide, per Deadline and The Express Tribune.

That free taste of the New Orleans witchboarding-school premise — three teen witches, dangerously charming warlocks, and lethal secrets — converted millions of casual scrollers into Disney+ and Hulu viewers within three weeks.

What Season 2 could hold

No premiere date, production timetable, episode count or casting news has been announced, though the main ensemble — Malina Pauli Weissman as Briar, Malachi Barton as Jake, Jordan Leftwich as Sasha, Ora Duplass as Tegan, Louis Thresher as Ollie, Tiffani Thiessen as Miss Graves, with Devon Sawa guest starring — is expected back, per Comic Basics.

Federle has teased storylines to outlets: Briar confronting Miss Graves about why she was given away, Ollie returning to Bristol to come out as a vampire to his family, and a mother-daughter pairing whose combined power could threaten others.

He told D23 the first season was built as a longer story that could lead into future seasons. Season 1 is streaming now on Freeform On Demand, Disney+ and Hulu.
