Chef Michael Warring will close his Vallejo restaurant by year's end and reopen fine dining in his home's garage next year.
A 14-Year Restaurant Packs Up — for a Garage
Per the New York Post, chef Michael Warring is closing his eponymous restaurant — Vallejo, California's only fine-dining spot — by year's end, with plans to reopen next year inside his home's garage.
The 18-seat strip-mall eatery opened in 2012 in Hiddenbrooke Plaza, in a former ice cream parlor, and will serve a final dinner on December 5. Warring, who runs the restaurant with his wife Ali Gulczynski, told the San Francisco Chronicle the move is "that intimate, close-knit thing on steroids."
Why the Reversal Is Surprising
Chefs usually chase bigger rooms, not smaller ones — yet Warring told the Chronicle he wants "a space where I could be completely free," saying every limitation of a traditionally styled restaurant is gone overnight.
The New York Post reports the couple are the restaurant's only employees, so moving home cuts rent and childcare costs dramatically. Warring wrote on Facebook that he imagines a restaurant that feels less like a place you visit and more like a place you're invited into.
The Menu and the Credentials Behind It
The restaurant the New York Post describes offers two fixed tasting menus: a 7-course at $94 per person — cream of broccolini, crispy duck confit, wild mushrooms, nectarine sorbet — and a 12-course at $134.
Warring is a Culinary Institute of America graduate who cooked at Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley, which the Post notes is repeatedly ranked among the finest US hotels. Whether those menus carry over to the garage remains undecided.
A Pattern: Dining That Feels Like a Living Room
The garage plan lands amid similar intimacy-driven stories elsewhere.
MyLondon reports Khadim Mane is crowdfunding £50,000 to rehome Little Baobab, London's only dedicated Senegalese restaurant, after the Africa Centre's sudden closure, saying the experience is "like being in your living room with your friends."
Mane's fundraiser had reached £7,660 of its target as of October 23, with 16 days left, and the restaurant won the African Food Award at the 2025 Be Inclusive Hospitality Awards.
What the Move Means for Vallejo
The closure removes the city's only fine-dining option, a loss the New York Post frames against Vallejo's reputation as a "hardscrabble" town.
Warring told the Chronicle he has never labeled the restaurant, and that with overhead gone he plans to use the interim to "figure out who I am on some different levels" — a rebrand and identity reset alongside the relocation.
What Comes Next
The New York Post reports Warring will host a final dinner service at the Vallejo restaurant on December 5, closing out fourteen years in Hiddenbrooke Plaza before the garage reopening next year.
Whether the garage version keeps the same pricing, menus, or name is still unannounced, as Warring explicitly plans to rethink the restaurant's identity during the interim.
